Position Overview

As a Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer at Diligent, you will play a hands-on role in designing, building, and evolving secure, scalable, and high-performing SaaS applications and services. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys owning technical delivery across projects, shaping backend architecture, and contributing to the long-term modernization of our platform.

You will work closely with cross-functional teammates to deliver customer value through well-designed APIs, maintainable Rails applications, modern engineering practices, reliable cloud-based deployments, and pragmatic use of AI-assisted engineering tools where they improve speed or quality. Success in this role requires strong ownership, sound technical judgment, and a collaborative approach to mentoring others, improving how the team works, and applying new tools responsibly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, review, test, and maintain Ruby on Rails features and services in line with Diligent’s agile engineering practices.
  • Own technical delivery for projects, epics, and major user stories, including solution design, implementation planning, and execution through to production.
  • Develop and evolve RESTful APIs and web applications with a strong focus on scalability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, prototype solutions where needed, and help separate major components and subsystems as products evolve.
  • Partner effectively with Product, QA, DevOps, Security, and other engineering teams to ensure smooth delivery of working software into production.
  • Champion code quality through thoughtful code reviews, automated testing, documentation, continuous improvement of engineering practices, and sensible use of AI tools for coding, debugging, and prototyping with appropriate human validation.
  • Mentor other engineers, share knowledge across the team, and help raise the bar on technical execution and delivery discipline.

Required Experience/Skills

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience in a commercial software environment, with strong hands-on experience building web applications and services.
  • Excellent understanding of Ruby on Rails and practical experience delivering production-grade backend or full-stack applications with it.
  • Strong experience with API and web development, including RESTful service design and implementation.
  • Experience designing secure software in environments that embrace DevOps, infrastructure as code, and automated delivery practices.
  • Solid understanding of microservices or service-oriented architectures and the trade-offs involved in distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with source control systems such as Git and GitHub, along with common collaboration and branching workflows.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to mentor peers, contribute to engineering standards, and help break down larger initiatives into executable work.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and data modeling, with the ability to reason about application performance and persistence-layer design.

Preferred Experience/Skills

  • Experience working with AWS-based systems and modern cloud deployment patterns.
  • Experience with message queues, asynchronous processing, or event-driven integration patterns.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerization, observability, and operational ownership of services in production.
  • Experience modernizing legacy Rails applications or contributing to platform evolution initiatives.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
