Job Title: Senior Software Engineer
Department: Research & Development – Blood Management Business Unit
Location: Baltimore, MD. This is a hybrid role with 3-days per week required to be worked in the Baltimore, MD office.
Hours of work: Typical hours of work are from 8:30 AM until 5:30 PM Monday through Friday. Additional hours may be necessary as needed. This position is exempt from overtime.
Compensation: $120,000 - $130,000
Overview
We are seeking a Senior PHP Developer to join our engineering team. This role is focused on building, enhancing, and maintaining critical applications supporting the blood and healthcare industries. The emphasis will be on back-end PHP development with MySQL, while also contributing to front-end work where needed. Familiarity with React will be helpful but is not the core focus.
The Senior PHP Developer will be embedded with an engineering team throughout all stages of the sprint cycle and SDLC. They will actively contribute to technical design, coding, code reviews, and release coordination while mentoring junior developers. Success in this role requires strong PHP expertise, database skills, problem-solving ability, and a collaborative mindset to deliver secure and scalable applications.
Essential Functions
- Application Development: Build and maintain PHP applications, including support for existing legacy frameworks.
- Database Development: Work with MySQL to design schemas, write queries, and optimize performance.
- Front-End Contributions: Support user interface development in React as needed, collaborating with front-end developers to deliver end-to-end features.
- Testing & Quality: Write and maintain unit tests with PHPUnit to ensure code quality and reliability.
- Code Quality & Best Practices: Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code while helping enforce coding standards within the team.
- Mentorship & Leadership: Provide technical guidance, code reviews, and mentorship to junior and mid-level developers.
- Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, QA, and other engineers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Agile Participation: Actively engage in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, and retrospectives as a core member of the team.
- Security & Compliance: Ensure applications meet healthcare compliance and security requirements.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance system performance, maintainability, and team efficiency.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of professional experience developing applications in PHP.
- Strong experience with MySQL including schema design and query optimization.
- Familiarity with PHPUnit or similar testing frameworks.
- Some experience with React and ability to contribute to front-end development when needed.
- Solid understanding of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
- Proficiency with Git and experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with proven success working across engineering and product teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience maintaining and modernizing legacy PHP codebases.
- Experience with cloud-hosted environments (AWS, Azure, or similar).
- Familiarity with healthcare, blood banking, or other highly regulated industries.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, Docker, or Kubernetes.
- Experience mentoring engineers or contributing to team-level technical leadership.
