Job Description: M&T Bank is seeking a Senior Mainframe Software Engineer to support the enhancement, maintenance, modernization, and production support of mission-critical mainframe applications. This role is responsible for designing, developing, testing, implementing, and supporting application changes using IBM mainframe technologies. The engineer will serve as a key individual contributor on complex initiatives, partner with business and technology stakeholders, and help ensure that supported applications remain stable, secure, compliant, and aligned with business objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete and oversee basic to complex systems analysis, design, development, testing, debugging, implementation, and production support activities.
  • Prepare and review user stories, acceptance criteria, technical documentation, test plans, estimates, impact assessments, and system documentation in support of Agile delivery.
  • Evaluate interrelationships and dependencies across programs, interfacing applications, vendors, platforms, and business processes.
  • Provide analytical consultation to identify effective technology solutions that support strategic business goals.
  • Follow and promote M&T development standards, Agile practices, DevOps practices, change management processes, and risk and regulatory controls.
  • Deploy mainframe components through automated pipelines and support issue identification, root cause analysis, and problem resolution.
  • Coordinate development tasks, communicate status and risks clearly, and collaborate with business partners, application teams, operations, and vendor partners.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge sharing to less experienced engineers.
  • Participate in on-call or off-hours production support as needed to maintain application availability and stability.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the business processes supported by the application and promote an inclusive environment consistent with the M&T Bank brand.

Education & Experience Required: 

  • Associate’s degree and a minimum of 5 years’ systems analysis and/ or application development work experience or Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years’ systems analysis and/ or application development work experience. In lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 7 years’ education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years’ systems analysis and/or application development work experience

Requires at least five (5) years of experience with mainframe application development, maintenance, testing, debugging, implementation, or production support using COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, File-AID, Xpediter, Abend-AID, CA-7, or other job scheduling tools. Experience must include working on complex application changes, preparing technical documentation, performing impact analysis, executing test plans, and supporting production stability in an enterprise technology environment.

Preferred Knowledge and Experience:

Banking, consumer lending, or loan origination domain knowledge; ACAPS or related mainframe-based banking applications; Easytrieve, IBM Developer for z/OS, GitLab, CI/CD, DevOps pipelines, z/OS Connect, API integrations, automation tools, Agile delivery practices, Jira, Confluence, ServiceNow, and production support processes.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $97,100.00 - $161,800.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.

  • Experience with Easytrieve+ or equivalent reporting/tooling
  • Experience with GitLab for source control, change management, and CI/CD pipeline management
  • Experience with mainframe debugging/analysis tools (File-AID, Abend-AID, Xpediter, InterTest, or equivalent)
  • Batch scheduling and enterprise integration experience (CA7, Control-M, MQ, or equivalent)
  • Proven experience leading technical initiatives and reviewing solution designs and code as an individual-contributor technical lead
  • Strong understanding of SDLC, testing, deployment, resiliency, security, and change management practices
