The Enterprise Clinical Data Hub (ECDH) team is seeking a Software Engineer to play a key role in designing and delivering scalable, cloud-native solutions that power clinical data integration across Optum Care.
In this role, you will move beyond feature development to own end-to-end services, contribute to architectural decisions, and help drive modernization efforts from legacy platforms into ECDH. You will work at the intersection of Java full-stack engineering, data platforms, and healthcare interoperability, enabling high-quality clinical data for downstream analytics and care outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and own end-to-end full-stack solutions using Java (Spring Boot) and modern UI frameworks (React/Angular)
  • Build and optimize scalable APIs, microservices, and event-driven services supporting high-volume clinical data ingestion and delivery
  • Contribute to system design and architecture discussions, ensuring scalability, resiliency, and performance
  • Lead or significantly contribute to data integration pipelines, including validation, transformation, and quality enforcement
  • Develop intuitive UI/UX components for internal platforms, dashboards, and operational tools
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Data Engineering, Architecture, and Clinical stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions
  • Ensure code quality, testability, and maintainability, including implementing automated testing strategies
  • Support production deployments, monitoring, and incident resolution in cloud environments
  • Identify and implement performance optimizations, technical debt reduction, and reliability improvements
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team best practices

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Solid proficiency in Java and Spring Boot for building enterprise-grade backend systems
  • Experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures
  • Solid experience with front-end development (React/Angular, JavaScript, HTML, CSS)
  • Experience working with relational databases (SQL) and data modeling
  • Hands-on experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile development practices
  • Solid understanding of system design principles, including scalability, fault tolerance, and performance
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot, debug, and optimize production systems

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with cloud-native development (Azure preferred) including services, networking, and deployment models
  • Experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka, messaging systems)
  • Experience implementing observability and monitoring solutions
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, code generation, intelligent testing tools) to improve developer productivity and code quality
  • Hands-on experience building or integrating AI/ML-powered services or components, such as:
    • REST APIs wrapping ML models or inference services
    • NLP/clinical text processing solutions
    • AI-driven data validation, enrichment, or anomaly detection
    • Integration with enterprise AI platforms or model hosting services
  • Knowledge of healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7, CCDs)
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Proven exposure to Snowflake or large-scale data platforms
  • Proven background in data quality frameworks or data validation pipelines
