Job DescriptionAbout the role
We are looking for a passionate Backend Software Engineer to join the Pricing Core team.
The Pricing Core team focuses on building and maintaining the main pricing platform that enables teams at Wise to price their products in a reliable, scalable and extensible way.
Our services sit in most of the products' critical paths, processing 100+ million requests every day and operating within strict SLAs.
You’ll have the chance to work on and shape the future of complex systems, dealing with high-throughput services, designing and building scalable, efficient and performant solutions.
The team sits within the Pricing Squad and you’ll work closely with teams within and outside the squad.
Main Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services written in Java using the Spring Boot framework, deployed on cloud infrastructure (AWS)
Build and maintain event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka for asynchronous processing of financial events across distributed services
Contribute and drive architectural decisions, ensuring we maintain a high bar on quality, reliability and observability of our services
Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, scalability issues, and technical debt in existing systems
Participate in on-call rotations to monitor and respond to production incidents for Tier 1 critical services
Conduct code reviews for team members, ensuring code quality, security, and adherence to engineering standards
What we’re looking for
Technical Excellence
Strong background in software engineering, with a track record of contributing significantly to large, impactful projects in a complex production domain.
Experience with Java or similar OOP language.
Expert in your technical discipline, with the ability to design for long-term iteration and scale.
You own the availability, reliability and security of the systems you build following engineering best practices.
You make sensible trade-offs between speed, scalability and risk, and optimise for a predictable, regular cadence of delivery.
Product mindset and autonomy
Ability to work on ambiguous and complex problems
Own the technical roadmap and deliverables of your project end-to-end, embracing long-term ownership
Use data to define, prioritise and measure the success of the initiatives
Collaboration, Communication and Growth
Great communication skills and the ability to tailor communication style depending on the audience
Ability to work with cross-functional teams to shape requirements and priorities
Ability to mentor and coach other engineers
Actively share knowledge both within the team and squad
Regularly seek and provide feedback
Nice to have
Experience in pricing systems and/or payments, finance domains
Experience working with distributed SQL engines (e.g. Trino)
Ability to build software solutions, APIs, or platform tooling on top of big data pipelines and analytical engines
Familiarity with configuration-heavy domain where business logic is shared between data and code
