Job DescriptionThe team you’ll be working with: Core Accounting in Finance
Finance drives financial accounting, business monitoring and representing Wise financials to board, investors, regulators and auditors. Their focus is on running financial processes in an efficient, scalable and controlled manner and ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting. Finance Services at Wise record over 1 billion ledger entries per month, averaging at 400,000 events per minute. Teams in Finance are responsible for the following:
Core Accounting: Providing ledger as a service and responsible for the Third Party integrations along with spitting the financial aggregations out.
Finance Implementation: Journaling of financial transactions of new customer products/features
Integrations Experience: Improving the experience and process of onboarding new product financials.
Data & Assurance: Managing the governance and controls over all financial data
About the Role
As an IC3 Software Engineer to join our Core Accounting team you would be responsible for shaping and delivering some of the key initiatives and functionalities in the team like:
Design, shape, develop, and test applications using Java, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Kafka and React in a micro services environment
Participate in the development of our ledger as a service, aggregation pipeline for financials, and 3rd party integrations
Learn and take ownership of the 3rd party systems we in finance have and how we integrate with them
Work cross-functionally in squads who are vital to driving the mission of making ledger and financials more timely, accurate and controlled.
Create clear and helpful interfaces, whilst maintaining consistency, maintainability and performance
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize product requirements
Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code that adheres to our coding standards
Participate in code reviews and contribute to the improvement of our codebase
Participate in team ceremonies and planning cycles
Technical Leadership & Delivery
Own large-scale projects: Lead the technical roadmap and deliverables for significant, impactful initiatives (8+ engineering weeks)
Design scalable systems: Build backend services and APIs with a long-term approach, using design patterns that enable easy iteration and scaling
Full-stack contribution: Work across the entire stack with particular strength in backend technologies, ensuring seamless integration between frontend and backend systems
Maintain system reliability: Take accountability for the availability, reliability, and security of the systems you build
API-first design: Ensure all products are designed with strong, well-documented APIs that partners and internal teams can easily consume
Product & Strategic Impact
Drive technical roadmap: Own and contribute to your team's technical roadmap alongside product partners
Product thinking: Provide strong feedback on product roadmaps, always able to articulate why something is being built, what customer problem it solves, and expected impact
Technical debt management: Proactively address technical debt and plan work to keep it within risk appetite
Cross-team collaboration: Promote collaboration across teams to minimize duplicate work and align everyone toward common goals
Mentorship & Team Excellence
Mentor engineers: Coach and assist other engineers in your team and broader engineering guilds
Own onboarding: Lead the onboarding process for new engineers joining your team
- Engineering practices: Ensure your team follows Wise's engineering best practices (observability, security, database usage, testing, etc.)
Technical Expertise
Backend mastery: Expert-level knowledge in backend technologies with up-to-date knowledge of your discipline
Full-stack capabilities: Strong understanding of frontend technologies and ability to work across the entire stack
Distributed systems: Solid understanding of distributed systems, microservices, and how to design them effectively
System design: Experience designing and building scalable, maintainable systems with proper abstractions
Leadership & Collaboration
Mentorship skills: Proven ability to coach and develop other engineers
Cross-functional collaboration: Excellent communication skills across engineering, product, design, and other functions
Ownership mindset: Embrace long-term ownership while building redundancy and knowledge sharing

Skills Required
- Proven experience developing backend services using Java
- Experience with Spring Boot
