The Role
Build and own platform systems, SDKs, pipelines, and tooling that let engineering teams ship faster and safer. Drive ambiguous, cross-team projects end-to-end, design system architecture, work across Python/C++ stacks, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, databases, and collaborate with ML, content, and product teams.

About the Role

Long before an autonomous vehicle is ever tested in one of our virtual worlds, an engineer at Parallel Domain has to build, test, and ship the software that creates that world. The Development Platform team owns the systems that lets them ship safer features, faster.

Parallel Domain builds the synthetic data and simulation platform that autonomous-vehicle and robotics teams use to develop and validate their systems. Our team owns the connective tissue of the engineering org: the SDK and platform services every other team builds on, the tooling and CI that move our code, and the contracts that hold our products together. When we do our job well, every engineer at the company ships faster and more safely.

We're hiring a senior software engineer for our team. Our area of ownership and work spans the entire engineering org, and our tech stack is wide and varied: Python and C++, data pipelines, databases, CI and build systems, transport layers, and cloud infrastructure.  The engineers that thrive here are excited about following a problem wherever it leads instead of staying inside one technology. You'll own meaningful, ambiguous projects from definition through delivery, with real autonomy over how they get done.  Solving the problems we face means being comfortable in and understanding the full breadth of our code base.

Responsibilities

  • Own ambiguous projects end to end. You'll take on broad, loosely-defined problems and drive them to a clean outcome, deciding the approach yourself rather than waiting for a plan. Autonomy is the heart of the role.

  • Take a high-level product view of the features you ship. You think past the immediate task to the user and the product: why a feature matters, who depends on it, and what "done" really means. You make engineering decisions with that context instead of just building to spec.

  • Think architecturally about complex systems. You see how a large system fits together and influence their collective design: which component owns what, how responsibilities are divided, and the interfaces between constituent parts.

  • Work across the whole platform. You'll range across the full surface of the platform over time: our Python pipelines and SDK, our control-plane services and databases, our CI and build systems, and our C++/gRPC service layer. You go where the work is most valuable rather than staying in one lane.

  • Collaborate across teams. You'll partner regularly with our reconstruction/ML, content, and product engineers, and you'll often be the person connecting work that spans more than one team.

  • Raise the bar. You'll make sound architectural calls, weigh tradeoffs pragmatically, and improve how the team designs, tests, and ships. You make the engineers around you better.

What you need to succeed

  • Autonomy and Ownership. You have a track record of owning ambiguous, cross-team projects end to end and driving them to completion.

  • Track-record of Delivering. You're a strong software engineer with a proven track-record of delivering complex projects involving multiple connected components.

  • Pipelines and Data Systems. You've built and operated production data or service pipelines, and you're comfortable with databases and data modeling.

  • Comfort in uncertainty. You move comfortably across unfamiliar, under-documented systems and can get your footing to drive value quickly.

  • Strong collaboration. You work well across teams and disciplines, and communicate clearly with both engineers and non-engineers.

Skills

This is the surface area our team works across and has ownership over and below are a set of skills and technologies that you will interact with on a daily basis.

.  On the Dev Platform Team, we value range, adaptability and flexibility.

  • Languages and Frameworks. Python, C++, gRPC, Proto, FastAPI, Flask, PostgreSQL, CMake

  • Systems & Infrastructure. Apache Airflow, AWS (including EKS, ECR, S3, RDS and Lambda), Kubernetes, Docker, Jenkins, Github Actions

  • Domain Experience. Build, CI/CD and Release Engineering. Cross-Product & Cross-Service Interfaces. Test Strategy & Quality Infrastructure. Familiarity with Simulation in Autonomous Systems

What Makes a Great Candidate

The best person for this role is energized by breadth and ambiguity. You'd rather own a hard, fuzzy problem that crosses four systems than a well-defined ticket in one. Most of all, you take ownership: you can be handed a goal instead of a plan and trusted to deliver, while making the team and the platform better as you go.

Skills Required

  • Track record of owning ambiguous, cross-team projects end to end
  • Proven history of delivering complex projects involving multiple connected components
  • Experience building and operating production data or service pipelines; comfortable with databases and data modeling
  • Ability to work across unfamiliar or under-documented systems and drive value quickly
  • Strong collaboration and clear communication with engineers and non-engineers
  • Proficiency with Python and C++
  • Experience with gRPC and Protobuf
  • Familiarity with FastAPI or Flask and PostgreSQL
  • Experience with CMake or equivalent build systems
  • Experience with Apache Airflow and production data workflows
  • Experience with AWS (EKS, ECR, S3, RDS, Lambda) and cloud infrastructure
  • Experience with Kubernetes and Docker
  • Familiarity with CI systems such as Jenkins and Github Actions and CI/CD/release engineering
  • Domain experience: build/CI/CD/release engineering, cross-product interfaces, test strategy and quality infrastructure; familiarity with simulation for autonomous systems

What We Do

Training and testing autonomous systems in the real world is a slow, expensive and cumbersome process. Parallel Domain is the smartest way to prepare both your machines and human operators for the real world, while minimizing the time and miles spent there. Connect to the Parallel Domain API and tap into the power of synthetic data to accelerate your autonomous system development. Parallel Domain works with perception, machine learning, data operations, and simulation teams at autonomous systems companies, from autonomous vehicles to delivery drones. Our platform generates synthetic labeled data sets, simulation worlds, and controllable sensor feeds so they can develop, train, and test their algorithms safely before putting these systems into the real word. #syntheticdata #autonomy #AI #computervision #AV #ADAS #machinelearning
