Summary
Our cloud continues to grow! The Data Engineer role at Temporal Technologies will play a foundational role in building out the data platform to support analysis, GTM strategy, product management, and operations.
This position requires an experienced data engineering professional with deep expertise across the entire data stack, and the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders in various groups like Sales and Engineering. The work we do is centered around providing value to the business. We stay laser-focused on prioritizing work that contributes to tangible, positive business outcomes. The impact of this role to Temporal and our data platform is high.
The ideal candidate will rigorously apply software and data engineering best practices to the ingestion, storage, and compute components of the data platform. The data engineer will also shape Temporal’s data strategy, guiding stakeholders in how they consume and act on data. This is an opportunity to design and build out a world-class data platform from the ground up by implementing best-in-breed technologies and collaborating with extremely talented teammates.

What You'll Do
- Designing and architecting the data platform in such a way that provides near term value while also considering the ability to scale to our rapidly growing data size and needs
- Build out data pipelines to support ingestion of both event driven and batch driven workloads from internal tooling as well as 3rd party software and APIs
- Harden existing pipelines with data quality checks
- Model data for OLAP purposes
- Evaluate and recommend tooling such as data processing engines, table formats, and reverse ETL
- Take end to end project ownership by facilitating working sessions with engineers and business stakeholders to design and produce data solutions that appropriately meet business needs
- Create guidelines and standards for how teams external to the Data Engineering team can both add data to, and access data from, the data platform
- Analyze costs associated with the data platform to provide projections and recommendations
- Monitor performance of scheduled and streaming operations to ensure optimal performance of data ingest, processing, and querying
- Contribute to data platform roadmap by evaluating opportunities and recommending projects tied to delivering business needs
- Create actionable dashboards and analyses that drive behavior in our business
- Train and enable stakeholders on new data products as they are released to ensure optimal utilization and outcomes
- Provide mentorship to junior engineers
What You'll Bring
- At minimum 7 years of industry (post graduate) experience across the data stack (ingest, storage, compute, data modeling, visualization)
- 0-1 experience designing and architecting a data platform for a SaaS business
- Experience owning key components of SLA bearing production data platform relying on distributed storage and compute components
- Experience building out data lake architectures
- Deep expertise within at least one of the major cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Experience working with a wide range of data sources (APIs, logs, event stores, etc.)
- Extreme proficiency in Python and SQL, additional languages a plus
- Experience with multiple data processing and query engines (Spark, Presto/Trino, Athena, BigQuery, etc.)
- Significant experience with both object stores and relational databases such as S3 and Redshift
- Ability to quickly gain proficiency in new tools and technologies
- Strong desire to continue to learn and experiment
- Strong communicator and collaborator with the ability to connect technical projects to business impact
Compensation
- The estimated pay range for this role is $165,000 - $210,000.
- Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Temporal's equity plan.
Compensation ranges reflect salary and commission compensation (when applicable) across several geographic markets. Employment offers carefully consider multiple factors, including prior experience, knowledge, expertise, skillset, market location, and job level assessed during the interview process.
