Senior Software Engineer (Backend) - Java Platform

As a Senior Software Engineer (Backend focused) on the Java Foundations Team, you’ll design and build core tools, libraries, and frameworks that empower Java developers across GetYourGuide to create scalable, reliable backend systems. Your pragmatic approach, data-driven mindset, and focus on practical solutions will ensure our tools enhance developer productivity and support millions of customers worldwide. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to set standards, optimize workflows, and advance our Java-based infrastructure.

• Develop Core Tools and Libraries: Design and implement reusable Java-based tools, frameworks, gradle plugins, github actions, and libraries that serve as the foundation for GetYourGuide’s backend services, enabling developers to build features faster and more reliably.
• Enhance Developer Productivity: Create and maintain baseline tools for debugging, testing, monitoring, and deploying Java applications, ensuring a seamless developer experience.
• Drive Scalability and Performance: Optimize Java-based systems for high performance and scalability, leveraging modern infrastructure like AWS, Kubernetes, and Kafka.
• Define Best Practices: Establish and promote Java coding standards, design patterns, and architectural guidelines to ensure consistency and quality across all backend teams.
• Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work with other engineering teams (e.g., Marketplace, Data Products, FinTech) to understand their needs and integrate foundational tools into their workflows.
• Mentor and Share Knowledge: Guide junior engineers, lead technical discussions, and foster a culture of continuous learning through code reviews, hackathons, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
• Innovate and Experiment: Explore new tools and practices to keep GetYourGuide’s Java ecosystem at the cutting edge, and compliant to industry best practices.

• Experienced Engineer: 5+ years of backend development experience, with deep expertise in Java and building scalable, service-oriented architectures. 
• Pragmatic Thinker: Skilled at breaking down complex problems into practical, actionable solutions, prioritizing impact and maintainability over perfectionism.
• Data-Driven Decision Maker: Proficient in using metrics, logs, and analytics to guide technical decisions, from tool design to performance optimization.
• Tooling Enthusiast: Proven track record of developing developer tools, libraries, build tools such as maven or gradle, and frameworks that improve productivity and system reliability
• Infrastructure Savvy: Strong understanding of cloud-based infrastructure (AWS preferred) and containerized environments (Kubernetes).
• Problem Solver: Ability to design robust, maintainable solutions for complex technical challenges, with a focus on performance and developer experience.
• Team Player: Proactive, collaborative mindset with a passion for mentoring and sharing knowledge. Excellent communication skills in English.
• Customer-Centric: Commitment to delivering high-quality code that supports GetYourGuide’s mission of creating memorable travel experiences.

• Experience with Spring Boot, Hibernate, or similar frameworks
• Experience with Kafka or similar messaging systems.
• Familiarity with golang and python
