Description:

What can you expect:

The Enterprise Architecture and Technology Engineering team at Marsh McLennan is passionate about creating strategy that makes our technology environment smarter, faster, and easier to manage. We’re committed to breaking down barriers, reducing costs, and creating a future where technology empowers everyone to do their best work. Our engineering teams within Enterprise Architecture develop best practices to meet our strategic goals; carry out proofs-of-concept to select the right technologies or approaches; and deliver foundational, reusable technical components used by all teams.

The Senior Software Engineer will work across three core areas within Enterprise Architecture:

AI: They will deploy generative AI services, including large language model APIs, ensuring robust security, efficient load management, and comprehensive lifecycle oversight. They will implement and maintain supporting services such as text manipulation and preprocessing tools, while promoting best practices for integration and usage across teams. Additionally, they will contribute to defining enterprise standards and operational guidelines for AI development, such as model selection, semantic caching and security standards, and MCP development.

APIs: They will develop enterprise-wide APIs themselves, promote their use by other developers and coach those developers in the use of existing APIs and creation of new ones. They will also contribute to the development of enterprise standards around APIs.

Reuse: They will design and develop reusable components and libraries that can be integrated into applications or deployed via containerized and serverless frameworks. They will advocate for the adoption of these components across development teams and provide guidance on best practices for their implementation and extension. Additionally, they will contribute to establishing enterprise-wide standards and guidelines to ensure consistency, scalability, and maintainability of reusable assets.

We will count on you to:

  • Implement best practice examples of APIs, reusable components, and AI technologies, deploy them into production and improve them over time
  • Serve as a role model for MMC Tech best practices
    • Showcase agreed Enterprise standard technologies alongside new candidates
    • Incorporate reusable components into your work and contribute to those services
    • Use AI, automated testing and CI/CD as part of the development process
  • Work with developers across the organization to help them:
    • Integrate reusable enterprise technologies into their applications
    • Contribute to enterprise-level capabilities
    • Serve as a coach / mentor to other developers on API engineering, AI and reuse
  • Support the definition of detailed best practices and guidance, working in conjunction with others in Enterprise Architecture and technical leaders in our business and functional areas.
  • Be a pilot user and early adopter of draft engineering standards and practices

What you need to have:

The Senior Software Engineer must have deep experience in backend engineering. They should understand best practices when developing services for consumption by other developers and be passionate about delivering the best developer experience possible. They will understand non-functional complexities of delivering shared technologies at scale, while also being able to evaluate which of those concerns will be critical for a given service and which will be secondary. They will write efficient, effective, reusable code that takes advantage of existing services, and be able to coach other developers to do the same. They will recognize that the advent of AI brings new opportunities to accelerate the design, development, and deployment of shared services, while understanding that it will take strong engineering skills to achieve this without compromising quality.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or other related field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • Six or more years of professional experience
  • Broad base of backend / server-side engineering skill, with experience in multiple languages and frameworks and the willingness / ability to learn new ones.
  • Experience building applications using Node.js / Express, Python / FastAPI, or similar technology stacks and frameworks
  • Experience working with either relational (e.g. Postgres) and non-relational (e.g. MongoDB) databases
  • Experience working as a coach or mentor of other engineers, including training them in best practices and use of new technologies
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to influence / convince technical and business stakeholders of value of new approaches
  • Able to work collaboratively with peers from all divisions across Marsh McLennan, able to lead discussions, build consensus and encourage adoption

What makes you stand out:

  • Experience designing and deploying applications on cloud infrastructure
  • Experience with using fully-featured API gateways such as Google Apigee
  • Experience with container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience building and supporting a high-volume network service consumed by a significant number of third-party applications
  • Experience contributing to cross-application code bases, libraries or services
  • Experience building AI into reusable components or providing AI-based services
  • Experience using AI to accelerate and improve the development process

Why join our team:

  • We help you be your best through professional development opportunities, interesting work and supportive leaders.
  • We foster a vibrant and inclusive culture where you can collaborate with talented colleagues to create new solutions and have impact for colleagues, clients and communities.
  • Our scale enables us to provide a range of career opportunities.
