Position Summary

As a Sr Software Development Engineer on the SMS team, you will design, build, and operate distributed systems that power large-scale, real-time text messaging for CVS Health members. You'll work within a collaborative, product-oriented engineering team responsible for the full lifecycle of our messaging platform - from message orchestration and carrier integration to delivery tracking, opt-in/opt-out compliance, and analytics. This role is well suited to an engineer who enjoys solving problems in high-throughput, low-latency systems while keeping reliability and compliance front and center.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable services that support inbound and outbound SMS/MMS delivery for member communications
  • Build integrations with SMS carriers/aggregators and messaging APIs (e.g., Twilio, Syniverse, or similar), including delivery receipts, retries, and failover handling
  • Ensure platform compliance with TCPA, CTIA, and carrier messaging guidelines, including opt-in/opt-out and consent management logic
  • Partner with product, compliance, and clinical/pharmacy stakeholders to translate messaging requirements into resilient technical designs
  • Own service reliability: monitoring, alerting, on-call support, and root-cause analysis for production issues in a high-volume messaging environment
  • Optimize for throughput and latency across queuing, rate-limiting, and delivery-confirmation pipelines
  • Write clean, testable, well-documented code and participate actively in code reviews and design discussions
  • Contribute to architectural decisions around microservices, event-driven design, and API contracts within the messaging ecosystem
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to raising the technical bar across the team

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in software development, including a mix of front-end and back-end technologies within a product-oriented, cross-functional engineering team
  • Strong foundation in software engineering fundamentals: problem solving, data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and concurrency
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of: Java, C#/.NET, or similar backend languages, plus experience with distributed messaging/queueing systems (e.g., Kafka, SQS, RabbitMQ)
  • Experience integrating with third-party SMS/messaging or telephony APIs (e.g., Twilio, carrier aggregators) is strongly preferred
  • Strong SQL skills and understanding of relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL)
  • Solid understanding of microservice architecture and API design
  • Experience designing, implementing, and operating distributed systems at scale
  • Clear, effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with regulatory/compliance requirements for text messaging (TCPA, CTIA short code guidelines) or another regulated communications domain
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerized deployments (Docker/Kubernetes)
  • Familiarity with observability tooling (e.g., Datadog, Splunk, Grafana) for high-volume production systems
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience

Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Analytics, Engineering, or related discipline. Master's degree preferred
