Senior Software Architect holds the overall technical ownership of a large area of work, a product or a part of a product, a specific technology or a client solution/s. The main responsibility is to make sure the area of work of responsibility adhere to the architectural and technical principles as per the guidelines issued by the Architecture Board. Senior Software architects often play a delivery role in addition to the main architect role where they hold the total responsibility of the technical delivery including design, quality at source and drive the technical team for timely deliveries within budget and time, supporting the project directors. They are expected to mentor and motivate technical teams and work collaboratively with other stakeholders both internal and external. Some architect roles will have line manager responsibilities.
- Hold the responsibility of the overall technical aspects of either a product, sub product or a very large technical area.
- Proactively identify and manage the implementation of all architectural changes and improvements to the area in servicing the business better. He/she should work with product managers in the area to identify upcoming business trends and technical enhancements that are required to service them and work towards securing investments via valid business cases.
- Holds the responsibility of aligning and expanding the area as necessary to the upcoming technology trends and demands while maintaining or improving the non-functional aspects such as performance, resiliency, security, hardware efficiency and operability
- He/she should make sure that the architectural designs and the codebase are maintainable and extensible. Researching and identifying credible third-party solutions including open-source solution that can be embedded into the area is expected,
- He/she should represent the area as the technical owner in senior internal and external stakeholder forums
- They are a member of the Architecture review board and are expected to provide inputs to review areas outside the responsible area. Also is responsible for getting the Architecture review board assistance for any changes/ alternatives that deemed complex and do not fall into the general design patterns.
- He/she should oversight the successful delivery and implementation of customer projects of the area. In certain cases, the customer can be another internal product or a solution.
- He/she should drive and provide the technical leadership to the teams for high quality and timely delivery of customer solutions. He/she is expected to identify and highlight any technical or delivery risks beforehand and should work very closely with the other business, quality and delivery management stakeholders in the overall software delivery.
- He/she holds the responsibility of training and mentoring all direct and indirect reports that include engineers and junior architects who work for the area and in the related customer deliveries. Special emphasis on the training will be required when new technologies or design methodologies need to be adopted in getting the team members and project stakeholders up to speed.
- Most senior software architect roles carry line manager responsibilities for a team of associate architects and architects.
- He/she should make sure that the team as an entity and everyone in the team is following the recommended SDLC best practices and standards. He is responsible for GREEN engineering baseline metrics and should contribute fully for other team level baseline metrics to become green.
- He is expected to provide input and feedback for overall company software architectural principles and SDLC best practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science/engineering or similar technical field
- Solid software engineering and architect background in C++ or Java technologies
- At least 10 years of industry experience and at least 2 years’ experience at the architect capacity
- Experience in providing technical leadership to medium size teams
- Being thorough with modern IT trends
- Hands-on experience in cloud technology, different open-source technologies and integration of them
- Thorough understanding of the full SDLC and related tools
