Position Summary: 

Discovery Life Sciences is seeking a highly motivated and scientifically driven Senior Scientist, LC-HRMS to join our Bioanalytical Sciences team. Reporting to the Principal Scientist, this laboratory-based role is responsible for supporting and advancing Discovery's Liquid Chromatography–High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (LC-HRMS) platform, with a focus on metabolite identification, biotransformation studies, structural elucidation, and qualitative characterization of drug-related materials. 

 

The Senior Scientist will lead the development, optimization, and application of qualitative LC-HRMS methods to support studies across a wide range of therapeutic modalities, including small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, lipids, and other emerging technologies. This individual will collaborate closely with Study Directors, Sponsors, and scientific teams to design bioanalytical strategies, execute studies, interpret complex data, and deliver high-quality scientific reports. 

 

A Day in the Life of a Senior Scientist at Discovery Life Sciences: 

  • Design and execute metabolite identification and biotransformation studies using high-resolution mass spectrometry technologies. Analyze MS/MS fragmentation data to characterize metabolites and elucidate metabolic pathways.
  • Develop and optimize sample preparation, extraction, and analytical workflows for a variety of biological matrices.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot LC-HRMS instrumentation to ensure optimal platform performance.
  • Collaborate with Study Directors, Sponsors, and cross-functional teams to meet project objectives and timelines. 
     

Must-Have Qualifications (Education, Skills, Experience): 

  • Master's or Bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Toxicology, or a related scientific discipline with at least two (2) years of relevant research or industry experience utilizing mass spectrometry instrumentation
  • 2+ years of hands-on industry experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting LC-HRMS instrumentation and associated analytical workflows.
  • Experience conducting metabolite identification, metabolite profiling, and biotransformation studies.
  • Demonstrated expertise interpreting complex MS/MS fragmentation data.
  • Experience with one or more of the following software platforms preferred: X-Caliber, Compound Discoverer, BioPharma Finder, Analyst and Empower.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

Study Execution 

  • Lead and support LC-HRMS-based metabolite identification, biotransformation, and structural elucidation studies.
  • Design and execute qualitative bioanalytical strategies supporting regulated and non-regulated studies.
  • Serve as a scientific resource for study design, analytical interpretation, and data review activities.
  • May function as the principal point of study control for assigned projects. 

Method Development & Analytical Innovation 

  • Develop, optimize, and implement LC-HRMS methods for characterization of drug-related materials and metabolites.
  • Design extraction, sample preparation, and analytical workflows for diverse biological matrices.
  • Drive innovation in analytical methodologies to improve efficiency, quality, and scientific capabilities.
  • Support development of new service offerings and advanced workflows. 

Data Analysis & Scientific Reporting 

  • Interpret complex mass spectrometry and MS/MS fragmentation data.
  • Characterize metabolites and metabolic pathways utilizing advanced software tools and scientific expertise.
  • Prepare high-quality reports, scientific summaries, presentations, and client-facing deliverables.
  • Present findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders and external sponsors. 

Instrumentation & Laboratory Management 

  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot LC-HRMS instrumentation.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is functioning optimally and maintained according to established procedures.
  • Support procurement activities, laboratory inventory management, and overall laboratory operations.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to instrumentation and study activities. 

Collaboration & Mentorship 

  • Collaborate effectively with scientists, Study Directors, Sponsors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Provide mentorship and technical training to junior and senior laboratory staff.
  • Foster a collaborative environment focused on scientific excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Support client interactions and scientific discussions throughout the study lifecycle. 

 

Compensation and Benefits: 

Discovery Life Sciences is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices, and we strive to provide employees with total compensation packages that are market competitive. For this role, the anticipated base pay range is $80,000-$120,000 annually. The actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter. The exact base pay offered for this role will depend on various factors, including the candidate's qualifications, skills, and experience. Your annual salary is only one part of your total compensation package. Other benefits include:

  • This role is also eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es).  These incentives are discretionary.

Location, work hours, and application details: 

  • Onsite – Malden, MA
  • Monday – Friday, start time between 7am and 9am local time
  • Less than 5% domestic or international travel required for mandatory site meetings and trainings
