About the opportunityJoin our growing engineering team in Cluj and help build the next generation of scalable software solutions that support healthcare innovation and scientific discovery. As a Senior Scala Developer, you will design and develop high-performance backend services, distributed systems, and data-intensive applications that enable complex clinical and research workflows.
This role offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging problems where scalability, reliability, performance, and software quality are critical. Beyond hands-on development, you will contribute to architectural decisions, mentor team members, and help shape engineering best practices within an international and collaborative environment.
Your tasks include- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and applications using Scala.
- Build and evolve APIs, distributed systems, and data processing pipelines that support complex workflows and large datasets.
- Drive architecture discussions and contribute to technical decisions focused on performance, reliability, and scalability.
- Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Frontend Engineers, Data Specialists, and DevOps teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Develop well-tested, maintainable, and production-ready code following software engineering best practices.
- Perform code reviews, share knowledge across the team, and mentor less experienced engineers.
- Support technical discovery activities, solution design, effort estimation, and feasibility assessments for new initiatives.
- 5+ years of professional experience in software development, including strong commercial experience with Scala.
- Solid understanding of functional programming principles and modern backend development practices.
- Proven experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems, microservices, or data-intensive applications.
- Strong knowledge of REST API design and integration; experience with GraphQL is an advantage.
- Experience with concurrency, asynchronous programming, database technologies (SQL and NoSQL), and automated testing.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, containerised environments, and CI/CD practices.
- Strong communication skills in English, a collaborative mindset, and a proactive approach to problem solving and mentorship.
- Availability to work onsite, in the office, from Cluj-Napoca 3 days per week
- Contribute to technology that supports healthcare, life sciences, and diagnostics.
- Work on complex engineering challenges beyond traditional CRUD-based development.
