Senior Safety Engineer

Role Overview:  

We are currently looking for a Senior Safety Engineer to support our manufacturing site within the Polyurethanes division in Rotterdam.

We are looking for a hands-on EHS professional who enjoys being close to the field and can provide practical support to operations, turnarounds, projects and major maintenance activities at the Rotterdam site. The ideal candidate will help teams plan and execute high-risk work safely, bringing strong operational EHS knowledge, pragmatic risk controls and the ability to influence effectively across the organization.

This is an onsite role based in Rotterdam and part of the local EHS team, operating within a high-hazard industrial environment.

Role Responsibilities: 

As a Senior Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for: 

  • Lead EHS planning and execution support for turnarounds, shutdowns, projects, major maintenance and high-risk work.
  • Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Projects, Turnaround teams and contractors to identify risks early and agree practical controls.
  • Facilitate and challenge risk assessments for non-routine work, simultaneous operations, permit-to-work interfaces and contractor activities.
  • Provide visible field coaching during planning and execution, escalating where controls are unclear, impractical or ineffective.
  • Support investigations, audits, walkdowns and corrective action follow-up as part of day-to-day plant EHS delivery.
  • Coordinate specialist support for fire risk, PPE, respiratory protection, asbestos, gas measurement and translate legal, Seveso and site EHS requirements into practical procedures and controls.

Experience and Competencies: 

We are looking for experienced candidates with strong practical EHS, safety engineering or operational risk management expertise in a high-hazard industrial environment.

What we are looking for: 

  • Significant EHS, safety engineering or operational risk management experience in a high-hazard industrial environment.
  • Engineering degree or relevant technical background; flexibility for turnaround execution coverage outside normal hours.
  • Hands-on experience supporting turnarounds, shutdowns, maintenance, project execution or contractor-intensive work.
  • Strong knowledge of risk assessment, permit-to-work interfaces, contractor safety, simultaneous operations and non-routine controls.
  • Able to influence operations and contractors through technical credibility, collaboration and constructive challenge.
  • Relevant technical, engineering or safety-related qualification, or equivalent practical experience, with ability to convert requirements into practical work controls.
  • Chemical, petrochemical, refinery or Seveso / COMAH site experience.
  • MVK, HVK or equivalent safety qualification; HVK preferred where supported by strong practical experience.
  • Fire risk management or fire risk assessor experience.
  • Experience with capital projects, maintenance programmes or major turnaround planning and execution.
