About the Department

The Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) Economic Research Department plays a pivotal role in deepening the Bank and Board's understanding of the economy and the evolving impact of monetary policy. This includes by: undertaking and publishing longer-term research projects in line with the RBA’s research priorities; building capabilities in the form of skills, frameworks and models, data and infrastructure; applying these capabilities to shorter-run policy questions; and building networks with academia and other researchers.
About the team

The Micro Analysis and Data team in the Economic Research Department uses various survey, administrative and other granular datasets and micro-to-macro approaches to answer macroeconomic questions central to the central bank and its research agenda. This includes issues around firm dynamics, labour markets, and household behaviour, all with a view to understanding the macroeconomic implications of these micro behaviours. The team also invests in data and capabilities for the RBA, and engages with relevant stakeholders in academia, as well as thinktanks and the public service.

About the Role

We have an opportunity for a Senior Research Manager to lead the Micro Analysis and Data team. This role will suit a senior economic researcher who displays a high level of strategic thinking and innovation. As a member of the senior leadership team of the Research Department, you will:

  • Set the strategic direction for the team, including its research agenda, communications strategy and data and capability investments.

  • Oversee and undertake policy-relevant research using various survey, administrative and other granular datasets

  • Build, develop and mentor a diverse and high‑performing teams of researchers.

  • Communicate your team’s complex analysis clearly and effectively to senior decision‑makers and other stakeholders.

  • Work collaboratively across the RBA to identify key policy issues and deliver insights effectively.

  • Help to identify and deliver on new high-value data assets

  • Build strong domestic and global networks with academia and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Play a key role in the leadership and strategic direction of the Economic Research Department.

About you

  • Excellent critical thinking skills to guide and produce targeted analysis on complex policy issues.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, lead and deliver a targeted research agenda using microdata to answer macroeconomic questions

  • Demonstrated people leadership skills and ability to nurture a culture of trust and collaboration in line with the Bank’s open and dynamic ambition. This includes the ability to develop your team to deliver results and build skills over time.

  • A strong technical background in macroeconomics, micro-econometrics, and use of large administrative datasets and surveys. Knowledge of topics across macro-labour, firm dynamics (particularly pricing) and household behaviour would be particularly useful.

  • Knowledge of Australian datasets (e.g. BLADE, PLIDA and HILDA) is desirable but not required.

  • The ability to effectively and influentially communicate complex research to audiences of varying expertise, in writing and verbally.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills.

  • An innovative and creative approach to research and building capability.

  • Policy-focused research and previous work experience in policy institutions are desirable.

  • A post-graduate degree in economics is required. A PhD in economics is desirable.
