The Senior Research Analyst – Iron Ore will apply strong analytical capabilities and deep market knowledge to enhance Wood Mackenzie’s iron ore research, insights, and client offerings.

Reporting directly to the Head of Steel, Iron Ore and Alloys Markets, you will be responsible for developing a deep understanding of our clients’ priorities and delivering frequent, data-driven, and sharply written analysis as part of our research publications. You will lead the development of innovative market insights, differentiated thought leadership, and forward-looking research on key industry trends. The analyst will engage regularly with clients and internal stakeholders, communicating Wood Mackenzie’s views, supporting commercial opportunities, and contributing to a collaborative and intellectually rigorous research environment.

Main Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive global iron ore market coverage, including analysis of supply, demand, trade flows, pricing, quality differentials, and market balances across major producing and consuming regions.

• Author regular research publications providing both near-term market outlooks and long-term strategic views on iron ore markets.

• Develop and maintain Wood Mackenzie’s iron ore market models, forecasts, and analytical frameworks, ensuring robust and timely market insights for clients.

• Analyse emerging trends shaping the iron ore industry, including steel decarbonisation, DRI demand growth, beneficiation, pelletisation, high-grade ore requirements, and shifts in raw materials demand.

• Monitor and assess developments across major iron ore producers, mine projects, infrastructure corridors, logistics networks, and seaborne trade routes.

• Evaluate the impact of government policy, environmental regulation, geopolitical developments, and technological innovation on iron ore supply, demand, and pricing.

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with miners, steelmakers, traders, port operators, shipping participants, and other industry stakeholders to enrich the quality and timeliness of our research.

• Effectively communicate research findings, market views, and strategic insights to clients through presentations, workshops, webinars, and one-on-one engagements.

• Represent Wood Mackenzie externally at industry conferences, client events, and market forums.

• Work closely with colleagues across steel, metals, energy, carbon, and macroeconomic research teams to develop integrated and differentiated market views.

About You / Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of global iron ore markets, including supply, demand, trade flows, pricing mechanisms, product quality differentials, and the steel value chain.
• Demonstrated experience analysing iron ore markets and developing market outlooks, forecasts, and strategic insights for industry participants.
• Excellent quantitative and analytical capabilities, with strong problem-solving skills and advanced proficiency in Excel.
• Systemic work-load management and planning skills
• Ability to work collaboratively within a global team spanning multiple locations and time zones.
• Good networked in the industry with contacts across the value chain
• A strong commitment to commercial excellence and ability to deliver high-quality research and client service.
• Experience presenting to clients, leading discussions, and managing clients in commodity, mining, metals, or related markets.

Expectations

• We are a hybrid working company and the successful applicant will be expected to be physically present in the office at least 2 days per week to foster and contribute to a collaborative environment, but this may be subject to change in the future.

• While this is expected to be a full-time role, part-time or flexible working arrangements will be considered.

• Due to the global nature of the team, a degree of flexible working will be required to accommodate different time zones.
