Full-time, hybrid with London office base - 3 days per week

IONATE is a deep tech scale-up building the hardware and software backbone for smart grids. Our mission is to transform power systems – from grids and microgrids to renewables and data centres – unlocking the massive potential in this under-innovated sector that touches every aspect of our modern lives.

We are now looking for an experienced regulatory and compliance engineer to guide our Hybrid Intelligent Transformer (HIT) through certification and grid approval across multiple international markets. You'll be the technical bridge between our engineering teams and the external bodies to deploy our tech into live networks.

What you will do:
  • Interpret and translate requirements from IEC, EN, UL, IEEE, ISO, and other applicable standards into a clear product requirements or certification  roadmap for IONATE’s products, covering the UK, EU, US, and other priority markets
  • Work alongside engineering, product, and manufacturing teams throughout the development cycle, ensuring compliance requirements are embedded into product  design from the outset
  • Develop and execute compliance and certification test plans by working with internal engineering teams and external testing laboratories or certification bodies (i.e., TUV, SGS, CSA) including preparing test specifications, setting up required test infrastructure, and performing the test
  • Investigate compliance test failures in collaboration with hardware and software engineers, identifying root causes, and driving practical and timely solutions. Prepare, review, and maintain certification and regulatory documentation, including technical files, declarations of conformity, risk assessments, and other evidence required to support product approvals and ongoing compliance
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with accredited certification bodies to ensure timely certification delivery.
  • Monitor evolving standards, regulations and grid codes and maintain close engagement with notified bodies, grid operators, and other relevant regulation makers to proactively manage compliance and market-entry risks
  • Represent IONATE within standards-development committees, industry working groups and technical forums, ensuring emerging requirements are understood early and reflected in product strategy and  engineering decisions
  • Mentor and Support junior team members while establishing repeatable, scalable compliance processes, templates, and best practices as the organisation grows
  • Contribute to compliance budgeting and resource planning for compliance-related activities, including forecasting certification costs and infrastructure investments in line with the product roadmap.

RequirementsWhat you will need:
  • A degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field
  • Proven track record of delivering regulatory compliance and product certification (e.g., CE, UL, UKCA, etc) for renewable energy, EV charging, data centre, or other power electronics related products. Strong working knowledge of IEC/EN, UL, IEEE, and ISO standards
  • Experience working across the full product development lifecycle, with the ability to define, interpret, and translate regulatory and compliance requirements into clear engineering specifications, verification plans, and design inputs.
  • Comfortable working with incomplete information, applying first-principles thinking to analyse complex problems, make sound decisions, and drive practical solutions.
  • Hands-on experience using electrical test and measurement equipment, including oscilloscopes, power analysers, spectrum analysers, data loggers, and other laboratory instrumentation.
  • The ability to travel nationally and internationally to our test & customer sites for up to 10% of the working year.
It would be useful to have:
  • Experience of grid-connected power electronics or transformer certifications
  • Exposure to grid-connected hardware such as low-voltage converters, switchgear, circuit breakers, or protective relays
  • Experience in low-voltage system design and testing (up to approximately 1 kV AC / 1.5 kV DC), including insulation coordination, clearance and creepage requirements, and EMC considerations. Medium-voltage testing background (up to 35kV) is a bonus
  • Comfortable scripting test automation in Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools for hardware validation
  • Familiarity with relevant power system, grid interconnection, and product safety standards, such as IEC 62477-1, IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, IEEE519, UL 1741, ANSI/IEEE C57, ERCOT NOGRR requirements, LV and EMC directive, and related IEC/EN/UL standards applicable to power conversion, utility infrastructure, and data centre power systems.

Benefits
  • Employee Option Plan: You get equity in IONATE, so as we succeed so do you.
  • Private Medical & Dental Insurance: From day one, we provide you with full, comprehensive private medical and dental cover through Bupa. You also have the option to add any dependents to your cover. Please ask us for more details.
  • Company pension: a flexible, and sustainable pension product to help you plan for your future.
  • Career Development: It’s important to us that you have the opportunity for ongoing professional development and career growth. You will receive an annual budget for professional development and work with your team to set and reach goals every year.
  • Flexible working schedules: You will have the flexibility for work-from-home arrangements. Talk to us at the application stage about this.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Low carbon travel is important for everyone, so we have in place a cycle scheme to help you purchase a bicycle.
  • Slow travel: We believe in a low carbon future, so if you wish to travel by a lower carbon method – but it takes much longer than flying - we will give you an extra 2 slow travel days per year.

Skills Required

  • Degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or closely related field
  • Proven track record delivering regulatory compliance and product certification (CE, UL, UKCA, etc.) for renewable energy, EV charging, data centre, or power electronics products
  • Strong working knowledge of IEC/EN, UL, IEEE, and ISO standards
  • Experience across full product development lifecycle, translating regulatory requirements into engineering specifications and verification plans
  • Hands-on experience with electrical test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, power analysers, spectrum analysers, data loggers)
  • Ability to work with incomplete information and apply first-principles thinking to solve complex problems
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally up to 10% annually
  • Experience with grid-connected power electronics or transformer certifications
  • Exposure to grid-connected hardware (low-voltage converters, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays)
  • Experience in low-voltage system design and testing (up to ~1 kV AC / 1.5 kV DC); medium-voltage testing (up to 35 kV) is a bonus
  • Comfort scripting test automation in Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools
  • Familiarity with specific power system and safety standards (IEC 62477-1, IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, IEEE 519, UL 1741, ANSI/IEEE C57, ERCOT NOGRR, LV and EMC directives)
