Our Mission:
Driving technology always feels old. Not by a little bit. We believe vehicles can be a thousand times smarter, safer, and more connected to the world around us, and our mission is to see it happen. In 2019, we joined forces with Honda as their first startup acquisition, and now we’re expanding our vision into building the future of connected vehicles for millions of people around the world.
Why Drivemode:
Join Drivemode for an exciting startup environment and a vibrant culture that combines impactful work, competitive compensation, and excellent benefits. By becoming a part of our team, you'll contribute to a crucial mission that revolutionizes the way people engage with vehicles, addressing both business needs and the world's environmental challenges. This presents an exceptional opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation and drive Honda's success in the automotive market.
About The Role:
We're looking for a Senior QA Engineer to lead testing of our connected vehicle mobile applications, working closely with hardware and software teams across Japan and Thailand. You'll take strong ownership of product quality, bring a proactive mindset, and aren't afraid to go beyond your immediate responsibilities to get things done. This role is based in Tokyo, Japan. It requires 25–30% travel to testing facilities in Japan (Tochigi and Yorii) and Thailand, with possible travel to other regions as needed.
Success in this role requires the ability to navigate both Japanese and English communication environments. You should be confident in reading and writing in Japanese and comfortable collaborating in English. We also welcome candidates who are continuing to develop their English skills and are excited to work as part of a global team.
What you will do:
Review and analyze requirement specifications, identify defects in documentation, and advise on solutions
Design, create, review, and maintain test cases based on specifications and bug reports
Prepare test data, tooling, and environments, potentially including device simulators, physical mobile devices, and vehicle hardware rigs
Collaborate with vehicle hardware testing teams on joint test planning and co-execution of tests
Execute functional and non-functional test cases across Android and iOS platforms
Report defects clearly, track resolution statuses, and verify fixes
Proactively flag quality risks and testing gaps without waiting to be prompted
Represent the global QA team locally in Japan
What we are looking for:
8+ years of experience as a QA Engineer designing and executing test cases
4+ years testing mobile applications on Android and iOS
Experience with some form of mobile automation (e.g. Appium, Maestro, XCUITest, UIAutomator)
Ability to read and interpret technical documentation including API specs, firmware release notes, and system architecture docs
Experience configuring and using standard API testing tools such as Postman
Japanese and English (written and spoken)
Beyond the technical qualifications, we value someone who takes ownership of their work, communicates clearly across hardware and software teams, and brings energy and initiative to a fast-moving environment.
Nice to have:
Embedded systems knowledge or experience
Bluetooth or wireless protocol testing experience
Automotive testing experience (CAN bus, LIN, Ethernet)
ISTQB or equivalent certification
Agile/Scrum experience
