As a Senior Project Manager at HS2 you will be responsible for leading multidisciplinary teams to manage the resolution of cross-programme risks and issues, coordinating diverse teams to develop integrated solutions for formal governance approvals, interface with external stakeholders whilst working collaboratively with internal delivery and functional teams. This role will work collaboratively with the Supply Chain to enable the efficient delivery of Washwood Heath to budget, time and quality and support the successful delivery of the whole HS2 railway into passenger service.

About the role:

  • To be responsible for supporting the Washwood Heath Area Director to deliver integration capability for Washwood Heath, working closely with the Construction JV, Programme Integration Unit, functional and stakeholder structures and delivering in line with HS2’s integration behaviours and ways of working. 
  • To be embedded within the Washwood Heath area and supporting the Director to effectively and efficiently manage integration risks and issues. 
  • To be responsible for leading a team of Project Managers. 
  • To be responsible for enabling, taking, and recommending best for programme decisions, to ensure successful delivery of the whole Systems programme. 
  • To be responsible for managing and working with a wide range of internal (to HS2) and external stakeholders to identify and resolve integration challenges. These will range from the Civils Integration Unit, Systems Delivery Integration Unit, Operations and Maintenance, matrix functions such as the PMO, Commercial, Engineering and IM, Main Contractors and Designers, through to external stakeholders such as DfT, ORR, HSE, Fire Authorities, Utilities Companies, Network Rail and TfL
  • To be responsible for horizon scanning for integration risks and opportunities and escalating to the Programme Integration Unit so that Phase level contingency is allocated appropriately and presents value for money.
  • To support the planning and execution of Systems Handovers and Transitions ultimately supporting the delivery of an integrated HS2 Railway into passenger service. 
  • To be responsible for reviewing and challenging programme schedules, looking at cross-HS2 dependencies to optimise delivery. 
  • To be responsible for supporting a collaborative culture which enables high performance by encouraging innovation and knowledge sharing between HS2 as the client, other Integrated Project Teams, and the supply chain.

  • Project Management – the ability to develop, plan and integrate projects to optimise target costs, dependencies, risk management, and project benefits. Skills profile aligned to APM Project Manager (advanced). 
  • Problem Solving – the ability to identify integration problems and review related information in order to manage the development and evaluation of options and implementation of solutions, including the ability to manage and plan multiple workstreams and consider the competing demands of stakeholders, cost, time, and quality. 
  • Decision Making – the ability to identify, manage, gather and synthesise the necessary information and facilitate the identification of options and the application of judgement based on logic and reason Analysis - the ability to analyse inputs, assess data in order to assist in the development of strategies and document supporting rationales. 
  • Influencing & Negotiating – the ability to influence and negotiate with internal functions and external supply chain partners. 
  • Building Relationships – Ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and suppliers to resolve emergent risk situations. 

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the project management knowledge aligned to the level of APM Project Manager (advanced) 
  • Understanding of the technical elements and architecture of the relevant scope of work within the overall HS2 programme, including interdependencies. 
  • Understanding of the nature of the relevant contract structures and the design and application of appropriate contract and supplier performance systems. 
  • Understanding of risk identification and management 
  • Understanding of project schedule management, dependencies, and risk assessment

Types of Experience

  • Experience of the entire project lifecycle including planning, procuring, developing, and implementing project activities. 
  • Experience of testing and commissioning across complex technical integration projects. 
  • Experience of handing over operational assets to the end-user and the suite of requirements 
  • Experience of leading, managing people and working across functions and disciplines to deliver complex objectives. 
  • Degree level qualification in project management, engineering, commercial management, or the equivalent experience.
