This is a fully remote role for candidates who are based outside of the New York Metropolitan area. For those located in the area, we encourage you to consider our hybrid work arrangement (1-2 days a week in our NYC office). The Senior Project Engineer I is responsible for technical compliance on renewable energy projects, including large-scale, complex Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and solar PV systems 5MW and larger. This role involves engineering functional ownership and oversight of the technical deliverables during the execution/construction phase of a project.
This position will be a part of the operations function under the project engineering department and serve as the key technical resource on the construction project team.
This is an individual contributor role and therefore does not have any direct reports but will exercise informal mentorship and guidance to junior level staff.
What You’ll Do
Project Execution (75%)
o Perform technical evaluation and selection of Owner's engineering services.
o Lead utility, regulatory and AHJ interface during construction.
o Perform detailed engineering design analysis, reviews and issue approvals on third-party design deliverables.
o Support interconnection and permitting processes with technical documentation and interfacing with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) during project construction.
o Perform factory and project site visits as needed in support of project construction activities.
o Lead quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) process to ensure that project is delivered in accordance to project specifications for system design, equipment, and field implementation.
o Provide technical guidance during site acceptance testing and commissioning.
Technical Oversight (10%)
o Develop specifications and perform technical evaluations to support final selection of BESS/PV technology and major equipment.
o Ensure engineering design compliance with industry codes and standards.
o Provide functional subject matter expertise to project team e.g core proficiency in transmission-level design, codes and standards, BESS technology, PV design, power systems protection and relaying, etc.
o Provide technical input to engineering design standards as requested.
Collaboration (10%)
o Work cross-functionally to contribute to improvement for existing processes and support implementation of approved methods, tools and best practices for the execution of safe, quality and high-performance projects.
o Provide effective communication of project performance to stakeholders using appropriate presentation tools.
o Collaborate with junior engineering team members by sharing knowledge and providing feedback when requested.
Continuous Learning (5%)
o Active participation in technical workshops, webinars and publications.
o Ongoing engagement in professional development opportunities.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
o Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, civil/structural engineering or a related technical field.
o Minimum of 7 years of experience in design engineering, with a focus on medium and low voltage power systems design.
o 5+ years professional experience in BESS/PV design, development and/or construction.
o Demonstrated competency in BESS, inverter and PV technology, their safety systems/standards, and commercial applications.
o Proficiency in power system analysis, specifically system design, equipment specifications and utility standards for medium voltage (distribution) and high voltage (transmission) level projects.
o Strong proficiency in one or more engineering specializations with strong understanding of design principles and renewable project applications.
o Strong proficiency with AutoCAD and MS-Office suite.
o Core understanding of power system modeling tools (e.g. ETAP, SKM).
o Comprehensive understanding and application of NEC/NESC code.
o Comprehensive understanding and application of industry codes and standards such as NFPA 855, UL 9540, UL9540A, UL1973, UL1642, UL1741, etc.
o Ability to apply critical thinking and lessons learned to design optimization.
o Advanced troubleshooting skills for addressing project challenges.
o Commercial awareness relating to contract compliance, cost control and relative value of engineering solutions.
o Excellent ability to document and present technical findings to stakeholders.
o Effective interpersonal skills to work with internal teams and external stakeholders, including customers.
o Ability to manage and deliver multiple projects with competing priorities.
o High level of accuracy in design and documentation to ensure quality outcomes.
o Self-driven towards professional growth and development.
o Alignment with Convergent’s mission, values and a strong interest in the Clean Energy Transition.
o As applicable, this role may involve physical activity, including but not limited to standing, walking, or lifting up to 50 lbs.
o 20% travel expected, primarily to prospective sites, project locations, customer, vendor visits, and for team events and company-wide meetings. Travel to remote sites may be required, which could involve driving or air travel.
Preferred Qualifications
o Advanced degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
o Transmission substation or high voltage infrastructure design experience.
o Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent certification.

Base Salary Range: $135,000 - $150,000; Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience.
