We are building a high impact product that reduces the harm and impact of organized retail crime around the world.
The Role

About Auror
At Auror, we're empowering the retail industry to tackle theft and Organised Retail Crime, a $150 Billion problem globally. It's high volume crime that's increasingly organised in nature and is putting people, retailers, and communities at risk every day.
Founded in New Zealand 11 years ago, we're working with some of the best and largest retailers in the world across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
Auror is connecting people and intelligence to reduce crime. We're using technology for good.
In partnership with our leading retail partners, we need people with the passion, determination, and innovation required to overcome one of the world's largest problems. If you're looking to make a difference with and for the people dedicated to stopping crime, for good, then we want you on our team.
The Role
We're looking for an experienced Product Designer to join our Labs team and help us unlock new products and markets. This team places strategic bets into potential growth areas for Auror and unlocks them through fast, iterative exploration.
It's not a role for the faint of heart; You'll need to be comfortable with building the brief on the run, changing tact on new information, and binning as much work as you keep. The role of the Labs team is to prove (or disprove) market fit as fast as possible. We're less interested in beautiful high fidelity visuals here, it's more about ideating, testing, refining, and unlocking information that will shape the future of Auror, and communicating it across the team.
You'll be dabbling in cutting edge technology, exploring the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning, working out how we amplify our customer's abilities. Coupled with this, you'll also be contributing to the next-generation of Auror (Auror 4.0) that is set to reshape how our customers interact with each other and solve crime collectively.
Alongside the high-performing Labs team, you'll also be part of our highly collaborative Product team who are responsible for shipping great product on the daily. From idea through to delivery, you'll be playing a critical role of designing the experiences we provide our customers, enabling our business to scale and take our software to the world.
At Auror, our Product squad work in streams. We currently have 12 streams of work and each stream has representatives from each team - this includes Product Manager, Product Design, Quality Assurance and Software Engineering. This way of working encourages and fosters collaboration amongst the team.
The core responsibilities of this role include:

  • Supporting the Labs team to design a next-generation user experience, taking high-level requirements, working them through an integrated and research focused design process to unlock future revenue streams.
  • Supporting the Labs team to communicate progress, building team and customer excitement.
  • Shaping the design practice, whether it's internally with the design team or the wider business and contributing to developing best practices for our teams.
  • Being an expert in visual design tools, such as Figma, including experience in creating and sharing interactive prototypes and design systems.
  • Having a strong understanding of the ethical impact of the work undertaken, with a responsibility to create tools and services for good, and an ability to consider the wider implications of how your work can affect our users, law enforcement and most importantly, the people whose information is stored on our platform on behalf of our customers.

This role reports to Hayden Raw, Director of Product Design .
An interface design native, I've worked on projects spanning game design, graphic design, UI/UX design, and product and service design for a range of digital agencies, start ups and government agencies. The projects I've worked on have spanned fin-tech, recruitment-tech, the energy sector, and government interventions for small business, but have all been bound by using a strategic approach to design.
Trained under a founding member of the Memphis design movement, my design style is a colourful deconstruction of form and function, grounded in simplicity. I love a design that challenges my priors, and breaks the "sea of same" we live in.
Brought up on the beautiful Ōtākau Kuiti (Peninsula area of Dunedin, NZ), I've recently moved back from Auckland to help ageing family members program their VCR's. Central Otago is my happy place; Where you're just as likely to find me in the hills on my mountain bike, as you are curled up with a Pinot and a pop-science book about how we live in a self-induced hallucination.
Requirements
You may be a good fit if you:

  • Come from a start-up background, but want to flex these skills inside a scale-up
  • Are pragmatic in your approach to design, understanding that you will throw away a lot of work in the pursuit of clarity
  • Can flex between the big picture and small details, being able to identify where to best spend your energy to unlock the next conversation
  • Can find ways to collect and use data to inform design and prove/disprove assumptions
  • Are across all the latest and greatest technologies and methodologies within the design world and you have a modern style that suits a global enterprise platform
  • Are comfortable identifying high level requirements and building a brief while you run at an opportunity
  • Enjoy variety in your role - you're happy regardless of whether you're analyzing data, hosting customer interviews, whipping up rough sketches, finessing pixel-perfect high fidelity designs or pulling together a slide deck
  • Have expertise in visual design tools - i.e. Figma
  • Enjoy collaborating with others and have experience working with a range of stakeholders from the Co-CEO's to Customer Success and Sales to Engineers and Product Managers
