Condé Nast thrives on collaboration, and our teams come together in the office four days a week (Monday - Thursday).
We value diversity of background, views and cultures. We celebrate people for their personal qualities, skills and contributions, recognising the power our brands have to influence and shape culture.
The New Yorker brings a distinctive editorial voice to everything it creates. Our goal is to build a stronger, more habitual relationship with our readers, making reading and play a valued part of their everyday lives. Across The New Yorker’s digital experiences and our Puzzles & Games offering, you’ll help give people compelling reasons to return: something worth reading, listening to or watching, a satisfying game, and thoughtful connections between visits.
We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to help shape these experiences across web and apps. Your work will span games themselves and the experiences around them, from gameplay and feedback to discovery, onboarding and the journeys that bring readers and players back. You’ll combine strong visual and interaction craft with clear product thinking, taking a key role in progressing initiatives from early exploration through launch and iteration. You’ll work closely with design leads, product managers, engineers, researchers and editorial partners to turn open questions into considered, usable products.
We’re also evolving how we design and build. You’ll bring curiosity and familiarity with AI tools, with room to develop your skills in prototyping and working more directly with code as part of the role.
What you'll be doing
Connecting reading and play to lasting habits You design both games and the experiences around them, exploring and refining gameplay alongside discovery, onboarding, progress and returning to play. You connect this work to the wider reader experience, considering how each interaction builds familiarity, enjoyment and reasons to return. You question assumptions and work with your partners to define what is worth solving and how you’ll know it has worked.
Bringing editorial character to digital experiences You translate distinctive brand identities into clear, engaging interfaces. You bring care to typography, hierarchy, layout and interaction, balancing the character of the brand with usability, accessibility and the needs of different devices.
Making interaction feel right You use prototypes to explore behaviour, timing, motion and feedback. Whether you’re refining a reading journey, helping someone discover a game or developing an interaction within one, you pay attention to the details that make an experience intuitive and satisfying.
Understanding readers and players You seek out research, analytics and direct feedback to inform your decisions. You run lightweight usability testing, partnering with UX Research where deeper investigation is needed, and use what you learn to improve the work.
Designing with and contributing to systems You use shared components, patterns and design tokens confidently, recognising where consistency helps and where a new approach is justified. You contribute reusable solutions that support brand expression and work within the realities of our platforms.
Staying close to implementation You collaborate with engineers throughout the design process, discussing feasibility early and reviewing the experience as it is built. You work through interaction details, edge cases and visual QA so the quality of the shipped product reflects the intent of the design.
Using AI as part of your practice You explore where AI tools can add value to your design practice, building on your experience and learning alongside the team. You experiment with ways to develop ideas, prototype and collaborate with engineering, applying your judgement to the results and sharing what you learn.
Learning from what ships You agree intended outcomes with your product and engineering partners, then use analytics and qualitative feedback to understand performance. You connect design decisions to measures such as engagement, repeat use and retention, and identify where further iteration will make a difference.
Contributing to the team You communicate your thinking clearly, build productive relationships across disciplines and participate actively in critique. You share your work and methods, support other designers and bring an open, constructive approach to feedback.
You'll thrive in this role if…
- You bring strong visual and interaction design skills, with particular care for typography, detail and the quality of the finished experience.
- You can take an ambiguous problem and turn it into a clear direction, working with others to make sensible decisions about scope and priorities.
- You’re interested in editorial products, puzzles and games, and what makes people return to an experience over time.
- You’re confident in Figma and interactive prototyping, and comfortable working with design systems, tokens and technical constraints.
- You’re familiar with AI tools, have used them in your design practice and are curious about developing your approach further.
- You use research and data to inform decisions, alongside a clear design point of view.
- You build strong relationships with product, engineering and editorial partners, and can explain your reasoning to people with different perspectives.
- You take ownership of your work while seeking feedback early and recognising when a decision needs wider alignment.
- You’re comfortable applying your skills to different brands and problem spaces as the team’s priorities evolve.
What success looks like
In your first six months, you’ll have developed an understanding of our readers, players, brands and platforms, and built effective relationships with your immediate partners. You’ll have taken a key role in shaping and delivering a meaningful initiative, with responsibility for progressing the design and room to influence its direction, working closely with the design lead. Your prototypes and design decisions will help the team resolve questions and move forward with confidence.
By the end of your first year, you’ll have carried initiatives through launch and iteration, with evidence of what improved for users and what the team learned. You’ll be a trusted partner who can independently move work forward, maintain a high standard through implementation and contribute useful patterns and practices to the wider design team.
What we'd like to see
We’re looking for a portfolio that shows your contribution to real digital products, the decisions you made and how the work developed. In particular:
- Visual and interaction craft — thoughtful typography, hierarchy and composition, alongside considered behaviours, transitions and feedback.
- Product judgement — how you framed a problem, explored alternatives and made trade-offs based on user needs, evidence and delivery constraints.
- Connected experiences — how your work fits into a wider journey and helps people discover value, continue an activity or return.
- Brand sensitivity — how you express a distinctive identity while creating an accessible, usable experience.
- Prototyping and experimentation — how you made ideas tangible and used prototypes or testing to answer meaningful questions.
- Implementation quality — how you worked with engineers to resolve details and maintain quality through to production.
- Outcomes and learning — what happened after launch, what you learned and how that informed your next decisions.
Experience designing consumer digital products is particularly relevant. Editorial, subscription, puzzles or games experience would be valuable, but isn’t essential.
Experience: Typically 5+ years in product or interaction design, or equivalent experience demonstrated through your work.
