The Senior Procurement Manager - Product Environmental Sustainability is a pivotal role that drives environmental performance improvements across Sandoz's Raw Materials, Research & Development (R&D) and logistics supply chains. Reporting to the Global Head of Procurement ESG within the Strategy & Transformation tower of Global Procurement, you will integrate key environmental criteria (priority: decarbonization, followed by water stewardship, waste reduction, sustainable packaging) into procurement strategies and supplier management. Leveraging a strong technical understanding, this role collaborates across procurement category teams and cross-functionally to identify, assess, and implement lower-impact materials and solutions, directly contributing to Sandoz's overall ESG goals and Science-Based Targets.
This role can be based in Madrid, Prague or Ljubljana.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Supplier-Driven Decarbonization & Resource Efficiency:
- Collaborate technically with key suppliers of Raw Materials, R&D, and Logistics to identify, evaluate, and actively promote lower-impact materials, processes, packaging, and transportation solutions.
- Drive supplier innovation in environmental performance (e.g., decarbonization, resource efficiency) through dedicated technical engagement with strategic suppliers. Ensure environmental metrics are key features in Joint Business Development Plans, actively seeking commercially viable, "win-win" solutions.
- Lead the 'Energize' program for Raw Materials, R&D, and Logistics suppliers, supporting them to sign Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to directly facilitate Sandoz's Scope 3 emissions reduction journey.
Sustainable Sourcing Integration:
- Embed critical environmental metrics (e.g., carbon, water, waste, packaging, transport emissions) into Raw Materials, R&D, and Logistics sourcing strategies and supplier lifecycle management. This will be done in close partnership with Procurement Category Managers and relevant business stakeholders.
- Apply Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) principles to inform Raw Materials/R&D/Logistics sourcing decisions and evaluate environmental versus commercial trade-offs effectively.
- Integrate essential environmental requirements, data needs, and improvement clauses into Raw Materials/R&D/Logistics supplier contracts, working closely with Legal and Procurement teams.
Target Contribution & Data Focus:
- Support the setting and tracking of targets for footprint reduction specifically across Raw Materials, R&D, and Logistics.
- Define, track, and analyze key environmental KPIs for Raw Materials/R&D/Logistics procurement, ensuring alignment with Sandoz's sustainability reporting needs.
- Support Sandoz's primary data journey, evolving towards comprehensive product carbon footprinting for these areas, aligning with internal technology initiatives.
What You’ll Bring To The Role
- You are a proactive and adaptable strategic thinker, driven by a passion for environmental sustainability, who possesses strong analytical and technical capabilities, commercial acumen, and excellent problem solving and collaborative influencing skills to drive results across diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree required in Engineering (Chemical, Environmental, Mechanical), Environmental Science, Chemistry, Supply Chain Management, or a closely related technical/scientific field. Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum 10years of relevant professional experience, combining Raw Materials sourcing, R&D Procurement, or Technical Sourcing within a complex, global manufacturing environment and demonstrable experience in applying Environmental Sustainability principles and practices within a business context.
- Experience in the Pharmaceutical, Chemical, Biotechnology, or closely related regulated manufacturing industry is strongly preferred.
- Deep understanding and practical application experience in key environmental areas such as:
- Climate/Decarbonization (especially Scope 3 emissions related to purchased goods/services).
- Water Stewardship.
- Circular Economy principles / Waste Reduction.
- Sustainable Packaging materials and concepts.
- Proven ability to understand technical specifications, manufacturing processes, and material science relevant to Raw Materials and R&D in the pharmaceutical/chemical sector. Ability to engage credibly with technical counterparts (R&D, Engineering, Suppliers).
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills. Experience with environmental footprint assessment methodologies (LCA principles, carbon accounting), developing KPIs, analyzing data, and evaluating environmental vs. commercial trade-offs.
- Familiarity with key environmental/ESG frameworks (e.g., GHG Protocol Scope 3, Ecovadis, SBTi, CDP) and reporting standards is a benefit.
- Fluent English mandatory
