Senior Principal Scientist of Microscopy

Regeneron is seeking an accomplished and innovative scientist to lead the Microscopy function within Imaging Sciences. The successful candidate will be a recognized expert in microscopy with deep expertise in cell biology, advanced optical imaging technologies, quantitative image analysis, and scientific leadership.

This individual will provide scientific and strategic leadership for a multidisciplinary microscopy team supporting discovery research, technology development, translational science, and early therapeutic programs across Regeneron's research portfolio. The role will build upon the core's current capabilities while driving the future vision of imaging sciences through the adoption of emerging microscopy technologies, automation, AI-enabled analytics, multidimensional imaging workflows, and integrated imaging solutions.

The ideal candidate combines outstanding scientific credentials as a practicing microscopist with a demonstrated track record of managing and growing a microscopy core facility, mentoring staff scientists, and partnering effectively with researchers across diverse therapeutic areas.

• Advance the scientific direction for microscopy and cellular imaging across Regeneron Research, aligning capabilities with priority biological and therapeutic questions.

• Identify, evaluate, validate, and adopt emerging technologies based on scientific value, technical performance, scalability, and portfolio need.

• Provide senior consultation that translates complex biological questions into fit-for-purpose imaging strategies, experimental designs, and quantitative readouts.

• Lead, develop, and retain a high-performing multidisciplinary microscopy team and foster a culture of scientific rigor, collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.

• Oversee annual strategic, operational, workforce, and capital-equipment plans for the microscopy function.

• Establish governance, metrics, workflows, training, and service models that improve quality, accessibility, reliability, turnaround time, and scientific impact.

• Provide scientific leadership across advanced optical, super-resolution, spectral, lifetime, label-free, live-cell, 3D, high-content, high-throughput, spatial, and translational microscopy approaches.

• Guide method selection, assay development, experimental design, technology troubleshooting, and quantitative image analysis, including machine-learning-enabled approaches.

• Develop scalable imaging infrastructure spanning laboratory automation, robotic image acquisition, image-data management, cloud analytics, AI applications, and digital microscopy.

• Integrate microscopy with molecular imaging, histology, pathology, spatial biology, and other Imaging Sciences platforms to generate coherent, cross-scale evidence.

• Partner with discovery, translational, platform, engineering, data science, and technology teams to deliver imaging strategies that inform target validation, mechanism-of-action studies, biomarker development, candidate selection, and translational planning.

• Mentor microscopy scientists and imaging specialists, build technical depth and scientific leadership, and train researchers in microscopy best practices and experimental design.

This role requires:

• A Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Cellular Physiology, Developmental Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Biophysics, or related discipline.

• Minimum 5 years of relevant postdoctoral and/or industry experience.

• Minimum 5 years leading a microscopy core facility or equivalent scientific organization.

• Demonstrated expertise developing and applying advanced microscopy methodologies to answer complex biological questions.

• A strong publication record with evidence of leadership as a primary or senior contributor in microscopy-driven research.

• Deep understanding of cell biology, optical physics, microscopy instrumentation and mechanics, image formation, fluorescent probes and reporters, automation, and quantitative image analysis.

• Experience selecting, implementing, and optimizing advanced microscopy imaging platforms.

• Demonstrated success managing scientific staff and multidisciplinary teams.

• Strong project management and stakeholder engagement experience.

• Preferred: Recognized external reputation in biological microscopy or imaging sciences.

• Preferred: Experience building or transforming an imaging core facility.

• Preferred: Working knowledge of machine learning and AI-driven image analysis.

• Preferred: Experience with spatial omics and multiplexed imaging platforms is desirable but not required.

• Preferred: Experience integrating microscopy with in vivo imaging, pathology, and translational biomarker efforts.

• Preferred: Record of successful strategic technology adoption and innovation.

Within the first several years, this individual will have:

• Established a clear strategic roadmap for the future of microscopy at Regeneron.

• Developed and mentored a highly engaged, technically exceptional microscopy team.

• Expanded the microscopy core from a service-oriented organization into a premier imaging innovation center whilst building strong partnerships across Regeneron research teams.

• Enabled broad access to advanced microscopy imaging technologies and quantitative analysis workflows.
