THE OPPORTUNITY

BCI (British Columbia Investment Management Corporation) is a leading investment manager focused on managing investments for our clients, which include public sector pension plans, public trusts, and insurance funds. Reporting to our Chief of Finance, Private Equity, we are seeking an experienced Senior Principal, Private Equity Finance to join our private equity team and contribute to the continued growth and success of our private equity program. As a key member of our team, you will play an integral role in driving investment decision-making and value creation, providing valuable insights on our private equity portfolio companies and funds. This involves ensuring that timely analysis and reporting is available to support and challenge investment decisions and having a deep understanding of where value can be derived from the portfolioYou will also be involved in the team’s oversight of portfolio valuations, risk and liquidity management, budget and forecasting, procurement, AI, data and technology. 

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

The Private Equity department manages a diverse portfolio of approximately $35 billion in global private equity investments comprising of fund, direct, and co-investments. The portfolio is projected to continue growing over the coming years, with an increased emphasis on direct and co-investment strategies. Our department currently consists of 74+ professionals spanning offices located in Victoria and New York City, organized into four sub-teams: Direct Investments, Fund Investments, Venture & Growth, Finance & Operations.  

WHAT YOU BRING
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business administration, or related field; MBA or CFA preferred. 

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in private equity, investment banking, or related fields. 

  • Expertise in financial modeling, valuation methodologies, and performance analysis. 

  • In-depth knowledge of private equity industry trends, market dynamics, and investment strategies. 

  • Familiarity with AI tools and their applications in finance, with the ability to apply these tools to enhance portfolio monitoring and analytics processes. 

  • Expertise in technical skills such as R, Python, PowerBI and Tableau to drive portfolio analytics and insights. 

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex data and derive actionable insights. 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders. 

  • Highly collegial; comfortable with shared decision-making processes and a collaborative approach; willing to voice contrary opinions and drive decisions to resolution. 

  • Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communication and presentation skills and the ability to clearly articulate and execute strategic initiatives. 

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. 

  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion. 

 

WHAT YOU WILL GET TO DO  
  • Analyze sources of return within the portfolio, identifying key drivers of value and areas for return enhancement and risk mitigation. 

  • Monitor portfolio and fund performance against relevant benchmarks, highlighting areas of outperformance and underperformance, and recommending actions to enhance returns. 

  • Through advanced analytics and a deep understanding of the portfolio, provide real-time insights into assets that may be appropriate to sell and where to access liquidity. 

  • Monitor and analyze portfolio company performance, including financial and operational metrics, and develop actionable recommendations for improvement. 

  • Report on program strategy and performance to BCI Board and clients, and internal and external investment committees. 

  • Conduct regular valuations of portfolio companies and private equity funds, using various valuation methodologies to assess and report on portfolio performance. 

  • Monitor the implementation and success of value creation plans for portfolio companies, working closely with the value creation and deal teams to ensure alignment and progress. 

  • Stay abreast of broader private equity trends, including market dynamics, competitor analysis, and industry developments, and apply these insights to inform our investment decision-making process. 

  • Collaborate with internal teams, including deal teams and investor relations, to provide accurate and timely reporting on portfolio performance. 

  • Support the due diligence process for potential new investments and exits, providing insightful analysis and recommendations. 

  • Support the budget, forecasting and fee processes, with robust monitoring and analysis, to ensure an optimal and value-maximizing cost structure. 

  • Help drive continuous improvement in our portfolio monitoring and analytics processes, leveraging technology, AI and best practices to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. 

 

WHERE YOU WILL WORK

Work from our downtown Victoria office. We are an in-person collaborative organization with the flexibility to work remotely 1-day a week.  

SALARY RANGE

BCI offers a competitive total rewards package which includes a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan and paid time off. 

The annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role is CAD $190,000 - $220,000. 

The base salary offered to the successful candidate will consider a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill set, level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered and consideration to internal equity. 

We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we operate and with consideration to internal equity and job structure. We aim for actual pay to be around the median of the market for target or expected levels of performance, and around the upper quartile of the market for excellent performance.
