Job Title
Senior Principal Engineering Leader, Legacy TransformationWhat does a successful Senior Principal Engineering Leader — Legacy Transformation do?
As a Senior Principal Engineering Leader focused on Legacy Transformation, you will define and advance the target engineering platform for a regulated fintech environment operating at bank-grade reliability. You will work across platform engineering, application engineering, architecture, security, and operations teams to modernize legacy services into cloud-native platforms. Your work will reduce operational risk, improve delivery consistency, and support secure, resilient experiences for clients and consumers.
What you’ll do:
Define and deliver target platform architecture for application programming interface (API) gateways, service mesh, developer platforms, shared runtime services, identity, authorization, observability, and internal engineering standards
Lead decomposition of monolithic and legacy platforms into bounded microservices with clear ownership models, defined data contracts, and controlled migration approaches
Design and govern zero-downtime migration patterns for critical payment, account, customer, and transaction services where service disruption creates client, regulatory, or settlement risk
Establish technical standards for Java and Go services, Kubernetes, Envoy, Istio, Terraform, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), secrets management, resilience testing, and production readiness reviews
Manage and develop senior engineering talent, including Staff and Senior engineers, through technical coaching, design reviews, and performance guidance
Lead technical direction across transformation programs, align engineering priorities across teams, and drive consistent execution against architecture, reliability, and operational objectives
Raise the engineering bar through review of consequential designs, operational controls, reliability practices, and measurable platform adoption outcomes
Responsibilities listed are not intended to be all-inclusive and may be modified as necessary.
What you will need to have:
13+ years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, or architecture roles building and operating large-scale financial technology, payments, banking, wallet, ledger, commerce, or similar regulated platforms
5+ years of experience defining architecture and leading modernization programs for platforms serving millions of customers or hundreds of millions of transactions
5+ years of experience managing and developing teams
10+ years of experience designing and delivering distributed systems using Java, Go, Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, API gateways, service mesh, observability tooling, and infrastructure as code
8+ years of experience designing reliable financial systems with controls for authorization, capture, settlement, ledger consistency, reconciliation, auditability, idempotency, duplicate prevention, and financial-grade error handling
5+ years of experience implementing engineering controls aligned to PCI Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS), Service Organization Control (SOC), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), data residency, encryption, audit logging, and structured change management practices
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, related experience and/or military experience
Experience leading modernization in a tier-one fintech, payments, commerce, banking technology, or cloud platform environment
What would be great to have:
Experience with bounded context design, saga-based workflow patterns, and migration controls for high-risk transactional services
Experience building shared internal developer platforms and engineering standards adopted across multiple product or platform teams
Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, related experience and/or military experience
