Position Summary

The Senior Principal Engineer – Pipe Stress provides senior-level technical leadership for piping stress analysis and piping design support across complex engineering projects. The role ensures piping systems meet the intent of applicable codes, project standards, specifications, and manufacturer requirements for safe and efficient operation.

This position performs and reviews advanced stress analyses, develops project and discipline standards, coordinates work with local and overseas engineering offices, and reviews and seals engineering documentation in accordance with applicable state and governing-body requirements. The role also supports project planning, estimating, scheduling, progress reporting, technical issue resolution, and mentoring of piping engineers and designers.

Key Responsibilities

Functional Responsibilities

  • Develop work-hour estimates, execution plans, and budgets for bids and assigned projects.
  • Track and report engineering progress throughout project execution.
  • Interpret project design standards and issue technical directives and design highlights to promote consistent application across the piping team.
  • Coordinate piping documentation and design issues with project managers and other engineering disciplines.
  • Perform pipe stress analysis and review or update existing analyses for piping systems connected to critical equipment, including pumps, heat exchangers, filters, compressors, tanks, turbines, and air coolers.
  • Use CAESAR II to qualify piping systems in accordance with applicable ASME codes, project standards, and project specifications.
  • Evaluate calculated stress results, displacement stress ranges, piping movements, and pipe support loads.
  • Perform Finite Element Analysis for special piping fittings, including evaluation of stress intensification factors (SIF) and fatigue considerations.
  • Perform dynamic modal analysis to calculate piping natural frequencies, reduce operational vibration risk, help prevent piping fatigue, and support safe plant operation.
  • Review, update, approve, and seal engineering calculations and technical documentation for final turnover to the client.
  • Review and approve project technical deliverables and engineering documents.
  • Work with engineers and designers to resolve complex technical issues involving pipe stress, supports, equipment interfaces, and piping design.

Leadership / Management Responsibilities

  • Supervise and review the work of piping engineers and designers, including personnel supporting projects through high-value engineering centers (HVECs).
  • Provide technical leadership and direction for project-specific pipe stress and support activities.
  • Mentor and guide team members locally and overseas on general discipline requirements and project-specific requirements for pipe stress and supports.
  • Coordinate with overseas offices to guide project-related stress analysis activities and maintain consistency in technical execution.
  • Support staffing, workload planning, work-hour estimating, budgeting, scheduling, and progress reporting for assigned scope.
  • Provide senior technical input to project teams and support resolution of critical or complex piping engineering issues.

Compliance / Operational Responsibilities

  • Ensure piping stress analyses and designs conform to applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Review and seal engineering documents in accordance with applicable state and other governing-body requirements.
  • Maintain technical quality and accuracy of pipe stress calculations, analyses, and project deliverables.
  • Support safe and efficient plant operation by identifying and addressing stress, vibration, fatigue, equipment nozzle load, and pipe support concerns.
  • Coordinate technical requirements across disciplines to ensure piping design is integrated with equipment, structural, mechanical, and project requirements.
  • Travel to overseas work-share offices and other project locations as necessary to support project execution.

Qualifications
