Essential Responsibilities
Synchronous Condenser (SC):
- Apply expertise in synchronous machines including theory, operation, and installation to develop and optimize synchronous condenser solutions. Generator or motor application experience is also acceptable.
- Coordinate synchronous condenser system designs with machine factories and power system consultants including specifications for circuit breakers, cooling systems, starting pony motors, excitation systems and step-up transformers.
- Conduct necessary calculations for equipment selection in synchronous condenser projects, including load (var) flow, short-circuit, and insulation coordination.
Fixed Series Capacitors (FSC):
- Perform, specify, and review studies related to the technical design strategy for FSCs.
- This will include advanced studies related to the design requirements for capacitors, metal oxide varistors (MOVs), bypass switch, discharge damping circuit, insulation coordination, the triggered air gap system (TAG), and resistive-inductive -capacitive (RLC) filters.
- Act as a senior reviewer for proposal and project execution as well as new product introduction (NPI) for above scope but, also including the protection and control hardware and software.
- Perform hands-on work related to testing or development. May include time in labs or the field.
Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM):
- Apply expertise in the specification of valves, reactors and protection and control systems to develop STATCOM designs in compliance with customer and industry requirements.
- Understanding of grid-forming controls and virtual synchronous machine algorithms.
General:
- Drive engineering tools strategy in development of FACTS solutions
- Drive and approve standard designs for FACTS products reference solutions.
- Develop and utilize Excel or coded (eg. Python, Matlab) based tools supporting the design and engineering of FACTS equipment.
- Utilize specialized power systems software (e.g., PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, ATP-EMTP, EasyPower, ASPEN OneLiner) to perform detailed transient and steady state analysis supporting equipment design and specification
- Participate in industry working groups (IEEE, Cigre, IEC)
- Knowledge of and experience using IEEE, IEC, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards and codes, with the ability to engineer design packages without explicit customer specifications.
- Knowledge of Real-Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) testing.
- Experience in installation, field-testing, and commissioning of high voltage equipment, with a commitment to safe work habits.
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills.
- Provides direction, oversight, and coaches other engineers as a technical mentor
