The Senior Power Electronics & Control Systems Engineer leads the end‑to‑end development of advanced power electronics and drive systems, with responsibilities spanning system simulation, control architecture, hardware design, software development, testing, commissioning, and validation. This role supports demanding applications across Marine Propulsion, Oil & Gas, Metals, Power Generation, and Industrial sectors, requiring deep multidisciplinary expertise and strong technical leadership.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

Control Architecture & System Specifications
  • Develop complete control architecture specifications for Medium Voltage Converter platforms and associated drive systems.

  • Write specifications for power electronic controllers, including commissioning test modes and operational sequences.

  • Produce detailed modulator state machine specifications based on topology simulations, enabling structured FPGA firmware development and reliable IGBT commutation.

  • Create type test and routine test specifications to support full converter validation.

  • Write all project artifacts, including hardware documentation, test procedures, and commissioning instructions.

Hardware Design, System Sizing & Component Specification
  • Design critical components such as diode bridges, DC capacitors, filters and IGBT modules using analytical and simulation‑based methods.

  • Validate hardware designs through preliminary testing, ensuring strong correlation with theoretical and simulated results.

  • Specify electrical components for complete electrical power plants, including cables, filters, inductors, capacitors, transformers, and converters.

  • Support system sizing and ITO activities to optimize Medium Voltage Converter offerings.

  • Design new Voltage Source Inverters (IGBT or SiC) and new Thyristor‑based converters (e.g., LCI rectifiers).

  • Define electrical specifications for testing environments to standardize procedures across submodules and full converter systems.

Software Development, HMI, and Automated Testing
  • Develop drive and converter software, including HMI interfaces, ensuring robust functionality and intuitive operation.

  • Validate and test software on test benches and Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop (HIL) real‑time platforms.

  • Implement smart testing methodologies using embedded boards to enforce timing constraints, verify switching transitions, and prevent damaging IGBT pulse patterns.

Simulation & System Modeling
  • Simulate and design complete power electronics systems for industrial applications such as marine propulsion, oil and gas, metals rolling mills, and power generation.

  • Develop offline and real‑time electrical system simulations to support converter design, control strategy development, and system‑level optimization.

PCB Design & Power Electronics Integration
  • Design PCBs for critical converter functions.

  • Manage PCB versions, manufacturing documentation and qualification tests

Engineering Tools & Technical Support
  • Develop engineering tools to support project teams in design, testing, and commissioning.

  • Provide expert support during drive commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization.

  • Support drive test and validation activities to ensure reliable system performance in the field.

  • Serve as the customer‑facing technical lead or principal investigator on advanced technology projects.

  • Provide Level 3 engineering support for complex issues involving power conversion, power systems analysis, power systems control, and energy storage system integration.

  • Lead technical discussions with customers, ensuring clear communication, accurate problem diagnosis, and effective resolution strategies.

Cross‑Functional Technical Leadership
  • Contribute expertise across simulation, control design, hardware engineering, software development, and VHDL implementation.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure innovation, reliability, and performance in complex Medium Voltage Converter and drive system development.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives for converter design, testing infrastructure, and engineering workflows.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • PhD with 5+ years' experience in Power Electronics

  • Or Master degree with 8+ years' experience in Power Electronics

  • Or Bachelor degree with 10+ years' experience in Medium and High Voltage Power Electronics Converters

  • Understand physical phenomena; strong theoretical and mathematical background; with the ability to understand new concepts and ability to communicate information clearly

  • Creative, passionate and integrate into a team

  • Willingness to travel when needed

Desired Characteristics

  • Highly motivated, curious, and not afraid to show initiative.

  • Excellent communication skills, articulate in simplifying complex problems

  • Ability to multi-task on a variety of projects to strict time scales.

  • Excellent hands-on debug skills, ability to get things to work
