About the role
This is a unique opportunity to join the Reserve Bank of Australia as it strengthens the operations of RITS, Australia’s real‑time gross settlement system, and other critical national payments infrastructure.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Platform Engineer to join our Platform Engineering team within IT. Reporting to the Team Lead of a newly established Infrastructure Automation team, you will develop and apply a strong understanding of business and operational needs to design and deliver secure, reliable and optimised platform services supporting critical systems.
You will enable safe and efficient delivery through well‑governed automation practices, balancing innovation with stability, security, and adherence to policies and standards. You will work closely with engineers across Platform Engineering and partner teams, you will contribute to consistent, high‑quality platform outcomes and continuous improvement.
- Design, build, automate and Platform Engineering capabilities using Infrastructure as Code (IaC), DevOps, CI/CD, and automation practices, with a focus on mission-critical infrastructure, applications, and processes.
- Develop, implement and optimise DevOps and CI/CD pipelines that are scalable, efficient and compliant with the Bank’s IT controls, policies, standards and architecture guidelines.
- Apply CI/CD best practices and contribute to the development of reusable modules, automation frameworks and patterns.
- Develop a strong understanding of the RBA’s RITS ecosystem, contributing to the definition of technical requirements and ensuring automation solutions meet required reliability, resilience and operational needs.
- Adhere to governance frameworks and operational controls, and contribute to change management, release management, audit compliance and risk mitigation practices within Platform Engineering.
- Contribute to the creation and use of reuseable patterns and guardrails, supporting consistency and compliance with enterprise standards.
About you
- Proven experience in platform, infrastructure or cloud engineering within complex environments such as financial services or government.
- Extensive hands-on experience designing, developing, and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using tools such as Terraform, Packer, ARM/Bicep, or similar.
- Strong experience with configuration management and automation using technologies such as Ansible, Puppet or Chef.
- Solid understanding of API-driven automation, integration patterns and platform service engineering.
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and associated tooling such as Azure DevOps Services, Git, Artifactory, and GitLab, including integration of testing, security, and quality controls.
- Proficiency in at least two scripting or programming languages such as PowerShell, Python, Bash, JavaScript, YAML, Java, or .NET, with experience automating Windows and Linux (RHEL) platforms.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with an engineering mindset that prioritises repeatability, resilience and service assurance.
- You bring 4+ years of experience in IaC, DevOps, automation, cloud or platform engineering.
- You passionate about building reliable, secure and scalable systems, especially where they matter most.
- You thrive in Agile or Scrumban delivery models and actively contribute to continuous improvement.
- You seek engineering excellence and actively strive for mature automation, testing and operational practices.
- You work effectively within teams and support shared outcomes, KPIs, and cross-functional success.
- You understand and operate comfortably within robust SDLC processes and governance frameworks.
- You communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
