About GFL Environmental
GFL Environmental Inc. is the fourth largest diversified environmental services company in North America. Our vision is to be "Green For Life," providing accessible, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions. At the heart of GFL are our people—"Team Green"—and we are looking for a passionate technologist to help build the foundation of our modern IT operations.

The Opportunity

Our platform engineering team is focused on empowering GFL's developers to quickly release secure, observable, and reliable applications by building a modern, lean platform.

Our mission is to build and maintain a platform framework where developers can focus purely on writing code, knowing our team handles the complexity of deploying and managing their environments.

As our Senior Platform Engineer, you’ll work directly with the Platform Lead to design and deliver the modular infrastructure and CI/CD frameworks used across the company. This is a high-impact role where you’ll shape how infrastructure and delivery happen at scale. While Terraform is our primary IaC tool, we value agility and pragmatism — we use the right tool for the job.

What You'll Do
  • Build the Framework: Design and maintain reusable, secure, and DRY infrastructure modules using Terraform.
  • Evolve CI/CD: Engineer and evolve CI/CD pipeline frameworks in GitHub Actions that integrate automated testing, security scanning (with Snyk), and deployment workflows.
  • Reduce Friction: Define and implement standards and tooling that make it easy for developers to adopt infrastructure and pipelines without friction.
  • Architect for Reliability & Cost: Design resilient, highly available, and cost-effective infrastructure patterns, promoting best practices for cloud utilization.
  • Enable Observability: Ensure all infrastructure and pipelines emit the right telemetry for downstream monitoring by our SRE/Observability team.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner closely with application developers, SRE, security, and operations engineers to ensure best practices are built into the platform from the start.
  • Document for Empowerment: Create high-quality documentation for all frameworks and modules to enable developer self-service.
  • Mentor and Collaborate: Mentor a junior engineer and work closely with the Platform Lead on architectural decisions and long-term platform strategy.
What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years of experience in platform, DevOps, or cloud infrastructure engineering roles.
  • Deep experience designing modular, reusable Terraform code, with a strong grasp of IaC patterns.
  • Strong AWS knowledge across key services (e.g., IAM, VPC, ECS, EKS, EC2, KMS, etc.).
  • Proven ability to build and maintain secure, automated CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
  • A pragmatic mindset — you care about elegant solutions, but not at the cost of delivery.
  • A strong belief in automation, DRY code, and version-controlled infrastructure.
  • Comfort collaborating across diverse teams and working directly with developers.
  • An understanding of governance, compliance, and auditable infrastructure.
Bonus Skills
  • Experience building internal developer platforms or self-service developer infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with container orchestration (ECS, EKS, Kubernetes).
  • Exposure to other IaC tools (CloudFormation, Pulumi, CDK) or wrappers like Terragrunt.
Why You'll Love Working Here
  • Define the Foundation: Work side-by-side with the Platform Lead to build solutions that make a real impact across GFL's engineering organization.
  • High-Trust Environment: Join a high-trust, low-politics environment where pragmatism beats dogma and good ideas are valued.
  • Impact and Ownership: Take ownership of critical components of a new platform and see your work adopted at scale.
  • Build What's Right: Help build a platform that is secure, scalable, and valued by its developer users.

We thank you for your interest. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
