The Senior Photo Editor is responsible for developing and managing photography for feature stories and photo essays for the print magazine and digital platforms. In addition, The Senior Photo Editor researches, commissions, and produces visually-driven stories across platforms. This Guild position reports to the Director of Photography.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, analyze, produce, edit, and commission photography for the print magazine and for newyorker.com.

  • Pitch, develop, research, commission, and produce original photo portfolios for print and digital.

  • Collaborate with other departments to develop, create, and produce original interactive features.

  • Discover and develop new photo projects from photographers, photo agencies, galleries, and book publishers.

  • Pitch and commission ideas for newyorker.com’s online photo column, Photo Booth.

  • Obtain accurate caption and credit information.

  • Work with photographers, agencies, vendors, and the company’s licensing and business departments to create budgets, expedite contracts, and oversee invoices in a timely manner.

  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of seven years of experience assigning and producing photo shoots for a national magazine or publication.

  • A strong portfolio of work that demonstrates artistic judgment and creativity.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Knowledge of photography and assignment photographers, and a general familiarity with photo rights.

  • Adobe Creative Suite skills are a plus.

  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and production skills. 

  • Confidence working on multiple projects with tight deadlines.

  • Knowledge of and interest in the topics covered by the magazine, including news, politics, and culture.

  • Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $85,000 - $110,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
