Senior Optical Systems Design Engineer
Wotton under Edge (4 days office based)
Up to £45,000 depending on experience
Renishaw is a global leader in the design and development of inspection probe technology and metrology systems. Due to organisational growth, we are recruiting a senior optical systems design engineer to join the laser and calibration products division (LCPD) at our HQ in Wotton-under-Edge.
You may be a recent graduate or an engineer with a few years’ experience wishing to develop your career. You will be involved in the engineering design of optical and electro-mechanical products, including laser-based measurement systems used in sub-micron measurements such as laser interferometers. You'll be given the chance to impart your knowledge and be part of a small team of engineers, interfacing with new product, current product and manufacturing teams where necessary. The role requires a hands-on approach and a solid background in photonics developed in an academic or industrial environment.

Responsibilities
Evolving and maintaining product system designs capable of measuring to sub-micron resolution which include precision optical, electronic and mechanical technology.
Demonstrating proof-of-concept experiments in the lab.
Developing concept prototypes, prototype testing and analysis to evaluate performance against product requirements.
Investigating product performance issues and providing solutions to agreed timescales.
Understanding and creating mathematical models at a fundamental level in a range of areas e.g. geometry, optics, electrodynamics, Monte Carlo methods
Use of numerical or analytical models to inform and guide the design and development of prototypes and products.
Identify product and project risks and take appropriate action to mitigate them
Working alongside production engineering colleagues to develop test systems and processes suitable for use in product manufacturing.
Key requirements
It is expected that applicants will be either physics or engineering graduates with a working knowledge of optical physics, ideally with a couple of years’ experience in an optical engineering position in industry or as a researcher in an optics, photonics, laser or metrology related field at university.

Geometrical and physical optics
Statistical analysis techniques
Photonics
An appreciation of optical metrology systems
Strong MATLAB or Python fluency
Zemax and LabVIEW familiarity
An interest in the design of electro-optical systems and assemblies
Analytical and innovative in their approach to problem-solving
Strong attention to detail skills
Able to demonstrate practical, hands-on skills
Able to develop experimental test procedures, investigate & analyse results and communicate findings
Able to communicate complex concepts and ideas clearly and professionally, via written reports and presentations
Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplined team
Practical and theoretical approach to projects
