The Role
Senior Operations Manager — AI/ML

12 Month Fixed Term Contract (maternity cover)

At GSK we see a world in which advanced applications of Machine Learning and AI will allow us to develop transformational medicines using the power of genetics, functional genomics and machine learning.  We are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to develop new therapies and personalized drugs that drive better outcomes for patients at reduced cost with fewer side effects.

To realize these opportunities in R&D, GSK has created a global Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning group (AI/ML), to focus on the development and application of AI/ML to problems of critical importance at GSK. The AI/ML group is built on the principles of ownership, accountability, continuous development, and collaboration.

The Position:

We are currently seeking to recruit a Senior Operations Manager on a 12-month secondment / FTC basis to work within the Clinical Development Operations team in AI/ML. The AI/ML Clinical Development group is working in an exciting space focusing on areas in which machine learning methods could increase probability of technical and regulatory success and reveal mechanisms of action and disease biology.

The role will be part of GSK’s AIML team located at the Stanley Building, which is in London’s thriving life sciences and technology cluster at King’s Cross. The Senior Operations Manager will support the Operations Director and partner with Operations, Responsible AI, Engineering and Product teams across the AI/ML group along with our key business partners (Risk, Finance, Procurement etc.). In this role, you will focus on uncovering process improvement opportunities, develop tailored solutions, and deploy automation to enhance working methods. Your efforts will help streamline operations and enable AI/ML project teams to focus on their most impactful work.

In this role you will

  • Serve as a trusted partner to scope, prioritize, and execute the most important cross-functional projects.

  • Provide portfolio intelligence and insights to leadership, identifying dependencies, resource constraints, and opportunities for operational efficiency.

  • Design and implement automation and continuous improvement solutions, leading discovery through to deployment.

  • Establish and maintain governance frameworks and documentation, ensuring AI/ML initiatives comply with internal policies and SOPs while minimizing operational burden on teams.

  • Utilise Agile practices in iterative development, with a strong emphasis on feedback, adaptation, and continuous improvement.

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project plans, proactively managing risk and ensuring stakeholder alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Collaborate with functional and business risk leads to identify, assess, and mitigate risks to AI/ML project delivery.

  • Proactively and independently manage a high volume of workload to a consistently high standard, by setting ambitious priorities, objectives and measurable targets.

  • Evaluate and recommend operational tooling and platforms that enhance team effectiveness.

  • Design and implement new ways of working that balance agility with governance requirements in a pharmaceutical R&D context.

This is a role which requires navigating complex, ambiguous challenges while building strong relationships across diverse stakeholder groups. You'll need to synthesize multiple perspectives, influence decision-making and drive alignment to achieve meaningful business impact.

Why You!

Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., life sciences, business management, computer science or related).

  • A track record of delivery in scientific/operational environments, with strong cross-functional and matrix working capabilities.

  • Comfortable acting as a bridge between technical and business teams by translating complex concepts and technical constraints into clear, accessible language that supports decision-making and operational planning.

  • Demonstrated ability to structure and manage complex projects and develop compelling business cases (articulating both the ‘what’ and the ‘why’).

  • Strong understanding of change management principles with track record of driving adoption of new processes/systems.

  • End-to-end technology project management experience (e.g. software development, webapp, automation) projects using agile methodologies.

  • Proficiency with project management tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence), including development of automation workflows and dashboards.

  • Strong ability to influence and build credibility at all organizational levels, particularly with directors to VP-level stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Master’s or advanced degree in relevant field.

  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2, AgilePM).

  • Experience with AI/ML product development including data management and data governance processes.

  • Experience in regulated environments (pharma, healthcare, financial services) with strong understanding of GxP, quality standards, and compliance frameworks

  • Track record of leveraging workflow automation tools (e.g. Power Automate) and agentic AI (e.g. Claude Code) to streamline operations and eliminate manual processes.
