Job Summary:

This role is critical to maintaining the expertise and capacity required to support VUMC's growing and increasingly complex network infrastructure. The Senior Network Engineer role provides essential technical leadership for managing network performance, reliability, security, and cloud-integrated services that are foundational to daily operations. This position will ensure continuity of support for strategic initiatives, including digital transformation, infrastructure modernization, and organizational growth. The role is responsible for proactively identifying and resolving network issues, implementing improvements, and advancing automation and operational efficiencies that reduce risk and downtime.
Note: This role is primarily a work from home position for someone living in the Middle Tennessee area, but will have on-site and hands-on responsibilities from time to time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Participates in network design and implementation.
• Performs network health and capacity monitoring.
• Makes recommendations for tuning and balancing networks.
• Troubleshoots and resolves complex network problems.

REQUIREMENTS

Technical Proficiency: 

Intermediate-level knowledge of: 

  • L2/L3 protocols 

  • OSPF and BGP policy 

  • Multicast 

  • Campus network designs 

  • To assess technical proficiency, we will use the following evaluation methods: verbal quizzing, verbal walkthroughs and explanations, handson lab work, and direct observation of performance for internal candidates, where applicable. 

Operational Practices: 

  • Proficient with ITSM processes (change, incident, problem, request management) 

  • Consistent use of documentation-as-code and deployment standards 

Role Expectations: 

  • Ownership of medium-complexity designs 

  • Advanced routing and multicast 

  • Automated validation (pre/post-change testing) 

  • Mentoring NE engineers 

  • 24/7 on-call rotation 

Projects: 

  • Independent execution of ≥2 enterprise-level projects (multi-site or impacting ≥500 users) 

Education / Certifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

  • CCNP Enterprise - Preferred

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
• Network Design (Advanced): Demonstrates critical levels of expertise in applying network architecture and design in challenging and complex situations. Creates, reviews and disseminates project justifications, diagrams, and other plan/proposal documents. Conducts traffic analysis and traffic engineering, fault identification and solutions. Evaluates new network technologies, techniques and products. Implements new product offerings and enhancements. Assesses, designs, implements and troubleshoots mission critical network infrastructure. Plans, tests, and assesses current disaster recovery plans and makes network changes as required. Often takes a lead role in the creation and evaluation of a corporate networking architecture.
• Network Analysis (Advanced): Performs management and fault diagnostics of complex enterprise networks resulting in the reduction of system downtime. Is an expert in major protocols such as TCP/IP. Ensures functional integration of LAN and WAN infrastructure devices and assesses difficult network performance and optimization issues. Conducts advanced capacity planning, traffic and baseline studies. Develops analysis reports, which detail findings, provide technology solutions and recommend the most appropriate actions to resolve challenging network issues. Has extensive knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies, Frame Relay, ATM, Ethernet, Token Ring, intranets, routing, switching, protocols, and the Internet.
• Operations Network Architecture (Intermediate): Has detailed knowledge of the architecture of the networks which support more than one core business area. Demonstrates knowledge of how the core business areas' applications and support systems are networked, how various components and parts interact, as well as what protocols and interfaces are used for communications and cooperation between modules and components. Participates in the overall planning and design of the specific core networks. Able to train and educate others in the structure and components of network architecture for those core business areas.
