Role Overview:
The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for the design, delivery, and ongoing support of complex customer and internal network environments, spanning datacentre, ISP, and on-premise infrastructures. The role involves taking full ownership of network installation projects, providing senior-level escalation support, and working closely with Network Management, Sales, and customers to deliver robust, secure, and scalable solutions. This position also requires proactive network monitoring, maintenance, and participation in a 24x7 support rota, with occasional out-of-hours work to meet customer and operational requirements. This role will entail a mix of office/home based work as well as customer site visits for installation/support
Key Responsibilities
To take ownership of installation projects, and liaise with Network Manager, Account Managers and Customers to deliver the installation project
To carry out ongoing maintenance and development of the DC & ISP network
Assist sales to answer technical questions for new customer proposals
Assist with the maintenance of monitoring systems to provide alerting
Pro-active maintenance relating to software and firmware updates of networking equipment
Occasional out of hours tasks depending on customer requirements on downtime around support and install tasks
Included within the 24x7 OOH call rota
To provide Network support for escalated tickets from Primary Helpdesk Team - remote & onsite if necessary
Required Skills & Experience:
Strong networking background and understanding of the following technologies:
Layer 2 understanding (ARP, MAC)
IP addressing and subnetting
Spanning Tree Protocol (STP)
Strong understanding of Layer 3 routing protocols:
OSPF
EIGRP
BGP
VPN technologies:
IPSec Site-to-Site VPNs
SSL VPNs
Exposure to a range of firewall vendors, including:
FortiGate & FortiManager
Sophos XG
Cisco ASA / Firepower
WatchGuard
Demonstrable skills in managing firewalls and related technologies, such as:
Zone-based firewalling
NAT (Network Address Translation)
Web, IPS and AV filtering policies
Device and user authentication integration
Strong switching skills with multi-vendor experience:
Cisco IOS
HP Aruba
VLAN creation, management, trunking and tagging
Cabling and connector types (Cat5/Cat6 copper and fibre optic cabling)
Wireless installation and support:
Experience with Ubiquiti UniFi deployments
Experience with Cisco Meraki deployments
Experience working with and managing Datacentre networks
Strong troubleshooting skills
Understanding of different Internet connectivity types – FTTC/FTTP/Leased Line
Experience with Windows servers and roles such as AD/DHCP/DNS/NPS
Experience with Hyper-V / VMWare technologies
Excellent customer facing manner
Previous experience in a similar IT role
Cisco CCNP and any other network qualifications would be an advantage
Full UK Driving license

Skills Required
- Strong Layer 2 networking knowledge, including ARP, MAC, IP addressing, subnetting, and STP

- Experience managing datacentre networks
- Strong network troubleshooting skills
- Understanding of FTTC, FTTP, and leased-line connectivity
- Experience with Windows Server roles, including Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, and NPS
- Experience with Hyper-V or VMware
- Excellent customer-facing manner
- Previous experience in a similar IT role
