Senior Data Engineer - Brand Marketing (All Genders)
Zalando’s Media Team within the Marketing department is looking for a Senior Data Engineer. Working collaboratively with the media product team, you will play a key role in developing automation tools to launch high-budget brand awareness and consideration campaigns. This position is an integral part of our in-house Media team and will report to the Engineering Manager.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

You will be tasked with developing and improving internal data processing tools and products that are associated with advertising systems.
- Your main objective will be to optimize campaigns and automate creative procedures.
In order to transform data and establish custom databases that link to advertising platforms and generate real-time ads, you will be required to work with various internal and external APIs, as well as creating them. These external APIs include GraphAPI (Meta), Google Drive API, Google DV360 API, YouTube API, TikTok API, and more.

Additionally, you will collaborate with various engineering teams to extract webshop data from Nakadi, S3, Data Lakes into the custom database to tie all data together to build real time ads.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
General Technical Expertise:
-
Extensive experience with data engineering tasks, including data manipulation, ETL/ELT processes, and interacting with data APIs.
-
Confident skills in Python development (coding, building, deployment), alternatively Python coding skills plus strong knowledge of any other general application language (C-like, Java-like, Golang, etc.).
-
Strong proficiency in SQL, with the ability to write analytical queries in a structured and clear format. Proven experience of optimizing performance for any distributed SQL engine (Databricks SQL, Spark, Snowflake, Vertica, Exasol, Redshift, BigQuery, etc).

Expertise in columnar or column-oriented storage formats, preferably Delta Lake/Iceberg, but at least Parquet is required. Understanding of storage trade-offs and tuning knobs for that format is required.

Familiarity with code and data testing, at least unit-testing, logging in a granular environment.

Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines on the level of understanding the steps and their necessity in the development cycle.

CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, infrastructure as code (IaC), and continuous monitoring.
Data Infrastructure & Integrations:
-
Ability to select a suitable technology for a data processing task at least from a constrained list with a strong requirement to motivate the decision. Ability to completely lead the system design process will be a strong plus.

Proven experience with distributed engines or analytical platforms (e.g. Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery, etc) as a developer. Understanding limitations and trade-offs for such a platform (that is claimed to be experienced) is required. .

Expertise in managing data integrations. Specifically using independent storage layers (e.g. S3), and APIs (REST, GraphQL). Ability to design and build such integration from scratch.
Data Modeling & Computational Trade-offs:

At least theoretical knowledge of how data storage and compute infrastructure parameters in a given context of a technology (e.g. Databricks + Delta in S3) might be tuned to optimize processing performance.

At least basic knowledge of normal forms for relational modeling.

Ability to design a data model for particular consumer/producer patterns.
Soft skills:

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts in a structured and clear way to non-technical stakeholders.

Proven experience mentoring and guiding engineers.

Practical experience of extracting and clarifying requirements from stakeholders.

Proven case of ownership over any key product, service or problem solving process in the past.
Will be a plus:

Understanding of visual analytics tools (Tableau, Looker, Microstrategy).

Familiarity with AWS stack and GCP.

Proficiency with Agile project management tools (Jira, Asana).

Familiarity with Agile frameworks such as Scrum or Kanban.
