We're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support new product development and custom projects for Locus Robotics’ clients. This position will report to the Mechanical Engineering group. In this role you will have a great deal of autonomy with respect to designing, fabricating, and testing new designs, as well as launching new products into production and supporting systems fielded at customer sites. Managing technical progress at contract manufacturers and their suppliers will be involved as well.
This role is hybrid out of our Wilmington, MA headquarters.
Job Description
- Gather inputs from both internal and external customers to generate sub-system requirements.
- Leverage a defined set of requirements to design efficient, elegant solutions, preempting manufacturability and future maintenance challenges.
- Design, model, and detail components of autonomous mobile robots and supporting accessories using SolidWorks and PTC Creo.
- Evaluate designs for strength, stiffness, and longevity, including fatigue analysis of static components and the lifespan of bearings or gears.
- Create designs that reduce assembly effort, collaborating with the operations team to validate and incorporate their feedback.
- Design components and systems for high-volume, low-cost manufacturing while meeting all functional requirements.
- Proactively engage with suppliers to explore competitive manufacturing strategies for both new and existing designs.
- Work with manufacturing and procurement teams inside Locus Robotics to meet development and production timelines.
- Develop test plans for validation of designs.
- Work closely with Contract Manufacturers to launch products and maintain product lines.
- Accurately document work and present to peers, customers, and leadership through design reviews.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's / Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 7+ years’ experience designing mechanical and electromechanical products.
- Design Experience in the following processes: Machining, thermoplastic & thermoset molding, casting, sheet metal.
- Posses a working knowledge of DFM/A, Six Sigma, and statistical tolerance analysis.
- Experience with prototype methods to accelerate design cycles.
- Requirements development and supporting test plans.
- Working knowledge of risk analysis techniques, e.g. “What-if” or FMEA techniques.
- Excellent team player, with a hands-on approach and collaborative attitude.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
