As a Senior Mechanical Engineer in Vanderweil’s Power & Utilities Group, you will be serving with and mentoring a team designing unique projects involving campus, industrial and institutional energy and utility generation systems, focused on simple cycle gas turbine and reciprocating engine power plants, combined heat and power, alternative fuels like biogas and hydrogen, fuel cells, thermal and battery storage, microgrids, among many other cutting-edge technologies. We serve a diverse set of clients including academic, biopharma, casino/hotel resorts, mission critical, and large scale and municipal utilities, among many other sectors.
Some of your responsibilities include:
- Foster Vanderweil’s commitment to client service by assisting our clients develop resilient, efficient, and sustainable large- and small-scale utility and energy systems
- Provide mechanical design leadership for complex technical and high-publicity projects in the energy and power sector including power generation, central utility plant, and thermal distribution projects from concept to completion
- Oversee design scope and monitor project activity for adherence to these criteria. This includes working in close collaboration with leadership, engineers, designers, and other discipline leads to develop budgets, schedules and work plans
- Develop and manage project mechanical design scope and resource planning
- Act as a key technical point of contact with the client, project manager, contractors, and other key personnel during project execution
- Expand your skillset by working with our experienced Power engineering team
- Perform technology and cycle selection for centralized utility generation systems
- Oversee all aspects of mechanical systems design including heat and mass balance, piping & instrumentation diagrams, calculations, equipment selection and layout, and piping and ductwork design as required
- Experience a small team atmosphere while working with our multi-disciplinary team across the USA
- Execute mechanical designs in accordance with Power Group procedures and standards and specific client standards where applicable
- Manage internal quality assurance and quality control reviews for project deliverables prior to client submission
- Perform construction administration tasks such as field visits and subsequent issuance of field reports, responding to RFIs and reviewing shop drawings.
- Travel for meetings and project site visits (less than 10%) both locally and nationally
Essential Skills and Background:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- 10+ years of related background with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 8+ years of direct industrial/power or process consulting engineering experience
- PE license preferred, must be willing to pursue licensing if not current
- Project engineering and/or lead engineer experience
- Experience with utility master planning, life cycle cost analysis, energy modeling, and hydraulic calculations for complex systems
- Expert knowledge of mechanical equipment design, piping, codes, and application of standard engineering practices
- Willing to provide technical training and mentorship for other mechanical engineers
- Familiar with industry-standard engineering calculations (hydraulic, thermal stress, etc) as well as BIM and similar design tools such as AutoCAD Plant 3D, Navisworks, Revit, and Bluebeam.

This position in Long Beach, CA has a salary range of $160,000 to $200,000 for a Senior Mechanical Engineer depending on years of experience, licensure, skill sets and education.
