GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE:
The Mechanical Design Engineer will work primarily on Products for the Mechanical Engineering and Custom Engineering departments. This person will spend at least 75% of his or her time on product development and improvements. Domestic and International travel may be required and travel is estimated at about 10% of the time. Will support the Corporate Quality Policy and, using TQM concepts, principles and tools, will make continuous improvements in work processes.
POSITION FUNCTIONS:

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
- Develop advanced mechanical designs for standard and custom plastic assembly products to meet specifications, schedules and cost requirements. A minimum of 75% of the time should to be spent on development work and the remaining time spent on engineering support duties.
- Evaluate and select components and materials used in products to improve reliability, robustness and quality of design.
- Recommend outside vendors for select tasks and projects and oversee their progress.
- Create and maintain documentation necessary for product development and manufacturing that conforms to ISO standards and TQM practices.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Communicate effectively to supervisor regarding the progress on scheduled projects, progress on achieving goals, and the results of any research conducted.
- Work and communicate effectively with other groups within the engineering department, division and corporation (as well as with outside suppliers) in a positive manner to achieve timely and cost effective deliveries.
- Provide technical assistance to manufacturing and sales as necessary.
- Keep an engineering lab notebook and regularly update it as per the corporate guidelines.
- Assist with installations, service and troubleshooting at customers’ facilities. Ability to travel at a short notice is required.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Prevent and resolve customer problems. The emphasis should be on prevention.

Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent is required.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
3-5 years of experience designing industrial equipment with motion stages is required.
MANDATORY SKILLS:
Proficiency in 3D- and 2D- CAD mechanical design. Inventor or Creo is a plus. Working knowledge of the modern manufacturing processes and practices. Good understanding of the DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) principles. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to work with minimum supervision. Attention to details and ability to focus on specific problems.
DESIRABLE SKILLS:
Experience with Custom Automation and Motion Controls is a plus. Experience with GD&T. Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis and Modeling is a plus.
