Role description:

As a Senior Mechanical Engineering SME, you will be instrumental in providing technical expertise to internal team members and external clients, helping drive Arcadis’ data center work forward. You will be responsible for guiding and mentoring our in-house engineering team by providing senior-level advice on mechanical system selection, cooling strategies, market trends, specialty consulting, and client engagement.

As a Senior Data Center Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in coordinating mechanical activities across large-scale building and data center projects. Your expertise will help ensure smooth execution, high performance, resilience, and compliance, while supporting project teams with technical leadership and proactive problem-solving.

Role accountabilities:

  • Support the design and delivery of mechanical systems for data center and mission critical facilities
  • Provide technical mechanical engineering input to clients and internal project teams
  • Apply knowledge of industry standards, codes, and best practices relevant to data centers and mission critical environments
  • Lead in developing mechanical designs including:
    • Cooling plant systems
    • Chilled water systems
    • Direct expansion (DX) systems
    • Air-cooled and water-cooled heat rejection systems
    • Computer room air handling and cooling systems
    • Liquid cooling systems and emerging thermal management technologies
    • Ventilation and pressurization strategies
    • Fuel oil and ancillary support systems as applicable
    • Building management system (BMS) integration for mechanical systems monitoring and control
  • Evaluate and guide teams on the pros and cons of various cooling systems, redundancy approaches, turn down ratios, energy efficiency strategies, and operational resiliency and redundancy
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, vendors, contractors, and client stakeholders
  • Participate in key design discussions and help communicate mechanical design decisions to clients
  • Contribute to all project phases, including: Pursuit, Concept design, Detailed design, Construction administration, Commissioning, Closeout
  • Support the preparation of proposals, particularly the mechanical engineering approach and technical strategy
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing, innovation, and continuous improvement within the mechanical engineering team
  • Help develop technical documentation, reports, specifications, basis of design documents, and design packages
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across multiple offices and global teams
  • Mentor junior staff and support team development where appropriate

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • P. Eng Registration in Canada
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering for data centers, mission critical facilities, hyperscale, semiconductor, industrial, or similarly complex facilities.
  • Experience in the design of:
    • HVAC systems for mission critical environments
    • Chilled water plants
    • Cooling towers and dry coolers
    • CRAH/CRAC systems
    • Pumping systems
    • Ventilation and exhaust systems
    • Hydronic system layouts
    • Mechanical system controls and monitoring
  • Experience with codes and standards relevant to data centre environments (ASHRAE, CSA, NEC/NFPA, Uptime, TIA942, etc.).
  • Strong communication and coordination skills with multidisciplinary teams and clients
  • Experience and passion for leadership and mentoring
  • Experience with data center cooling design and resilient system configurations
  • Familiarity with redundancy strategies such as N, N+1, 2N, and concurrently maintainable system approaches
  • Experience with energy-efficient cooling solutions, sustainability goals, and thermal optimization strategies
  • Construction administration and commissioning experience for mission critical projects

A competitive salary will be offered, reflective of experience and expertise. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.

Skills Required
