Job DescriptionGeneral Responsibility:
The Sr. Mechanical Designer is a senior contributor within the engineering team, responsible for the mechanical layout, detailed design, and drafting of bulk material handling systems. This role supports projects across the full lifecycle—from bid and basic engineering through detailed design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning—with a strong emphasis on conveyor systems and associated equipment. The Mechanical Designer ensures that all deliverables are accurate, constructible, and aligned with project requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute mechanical design and drafting activities in accordance with sound engineering principles and established business practices
- Develop detailed layouts, general arrangements, assembly drawings, and fabrication drawings for bulk material handling systems, including belt conveyors, feeders, transfer stations, and related equipment
- Translate engineering concepts, calculations, and design criteria into high-quality, constructible drawings
- Ensure all design deliverables comply with project specifications, applicable codes, standards, and internal procedures
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, structural, and electrical/instrumentation engineers, as well as project teams, to resolve technical and interface challenges
- Support internal design reviews, engineering checks, and constructability assessments
- Incorporate supplier and vendor data into designs, ensuring alignment with project and equipment requirements
- Support procurement, fabrication, pre-assembly, erection, and commissioning activities as needed
- Review shop drawings and fabrication details for accuracy and compliance with project specifications
- Conduct site and shop visits to support design validation, troubleshooting, and issue resolution
- Promote safety, quality, and maintainability in all design solutions
- Perform additional duties as assigned
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field
- 10+ years of experience as a Mechanical Designer within industrial sectors such as mining, aggregates, cement, or bulk material handling
- Strong experience with material handling systems, with direct conveyor layout and design expertise strongly preferred
- Solid understanding of mechanical components, tolerances, fabrication methods, and erection practices
- Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar platforms)
- Experience working within multidisciplinary and geographically distributed project teams
- Strong attention to detail with excellent technical and problem-solving capabilities
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to travel to supplier locations, fabrication shops, and project sites as required
