Group/Division

SPTS wafer processing solutions include market-leading silicon etch, dielectric etch, dry-release etch, PVD, PECVD and molecular vapor deposition (MVD®), available with a range of wafer-handling options applicable to R&D, pilot production, or volume production environments. SPTS is headquartered and has its main manufacturing facility in Newport, UK, with additional manufacturing in Allentown, Pennsylvania. SPTS operates across 19 countries in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific, and offers comprehensive service and spare parts support through a worldwide network of service centers and qualified local agents.

Job Description/Preferred Qualifications

Part of the SPTS Engineering division, the Platform Hardware Group is a multi-disciplined team, providing automation solutions to enable the integration of SPTS process systems into customer semiconductor fabrication factories worldwide. A Platform Mechanical Design Engineer designs and supports core structural, mechanical and thermal systems.

As the successful candidate, you will be an experienced Mechanical Engineer with good understanding of designing components to operate in challenging environments in a highly competitive industry.  You would be supporting major cross department projects and so previous exposure to other fields of engineering, preferable electrical would be desirable.

You would be working with other engineers in the group with equipment design/integration and expect to work to tight deadlines in a highly regulated industry. You would show initiative and be motivated to learn new skills, very adaptable and keen to take advantage of the opportunities SPTS can offer in progressing your personal development. You will be based in the Newport factory; however, this position may also involve a small amount of international travel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical design projects from concept to release as product.
  • Designing mechanical components to operate in a vacuum environment.
  • Working in multi-disciplined project teams for systems design.
  • Pneumatic systems design.
  • Obsolescence engineering.
  • Producing key reports from first principles to meet regulation requirements.  
  • Other documentation –Service Bulletins, Procedures, Reports, Engineering Drawings.

Support activities:

  • Support other areas of the business such a Manufacturing, Commodity and NPL departments.
  • Bill of material cost control
  • Supplier contact
  • Building and testing prototypes
  • Leading small projects from concept to implementation
  • Mentoring to junior engineers

Experience in the following areas is desirable but not essential:

  • Previous experience of working in the semiconductor or hi-technology related industry would be advantageous. 
  • Experience of ERP/PLM/PDM systems
  • Experience in P&ID's
  • Experience with CE/SEMI (or equivalent) compliance requirements would be desirable.

  • Good IT Skills (minimum Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum Degree in Mechanical/Mechatronics engineering or related.
  • 3D CAD experience with Solid Edge or similar is essential.
  • Proven experience working in a development and design environment.
  • Design experience for CNC machining and fabrication is essential.
  • Experience using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) analysis tools.
  • Excellent knowledge of GD&T
