Join our team as a Senior Manager, Software Engineering helping to lead the build of our next generation Diners Club International network and help Discover not just achieve our vision, but who are keen to learn new technologies, grow their skills and, most importantly, drive the evolution of our software engineering practices.
We're looking for passionate, collaborative individuals that can help shape the evolution our payment networks and position Discover Financial Services as the leading direct bank and payments partner who is responsible for the application ownership, development delivery, support for value streams and manages a team, including hiring, directing, mentoring, and assigning work.
This position is primarily responsible for managing resources and processes to deliver high quality applications, services and data in support of the company's objectives. As a key member of the Payment Network leadership team the individual will be expected to collaborate with key business and technology partners in helping to define the strategy and execution of our application development and architecture.
We embrace change and evolution, both in our staff and systems. We are building new payment systems for our networks that allow us to utilise modern technologies (APIs , Cloud, Open Source, Event driven real time processing) and approaches to delivery (Scaled Agile, CI/CD, TDD + BDD) that will enable us to produce software and systems to support our business and adapt to change within the fast paced FinTech world.
How You'll Do It

  • Manages software ownership and development from initial concept through continuous improvement.
  • Coaches and mentors team members. Supports individuals to achieve their individual development goals. Utilizes Agile and Lean practices to identify an solve systemic issues.
  • Utilizes tools to support data driven decision making. Identifies and removes blockers to enable the team to meet business goals.
  • Consults with management in the analysis of short and long range business requirements and recommends innovations.


Qualifications You'll Need
The Basics

  • Bachelors Information Technology or related
  • Experience in Application Development experience
  • People Management experience

  • Proven commercial experience engaging third party vendors
  • Proven experience in coaching teams
  • Commercial experience developing in a Scaled Agile environment
  • Credible understanding of the technology stack
    • Java / J2EE , Spring, RESTful APIs, Open Source software, Relational Databases
    • Knowledge and understanding of CICD processes
  • Passion for learning
  • Strong collaborator
  • Understanding of defining, measuring and governing against key delivery + quality metrics
  • Ability to communicate and present in every direction (downwards, upwards, to peers)
  • This position will require the candidate to perform a wide variety of tasks. A wide degree of creativity is expected as well as a strategic outlook with regard to technology.
