As a hands-on Senior Manager of Software Engineering within the OptumRx technology team, you will lead and actively contribute to a highly skilled engineering team dedicated to building, modernizing, and supporting high-impact pharmacy benefit and healthcare solutions. In this role, you will drive technical excellence across full-stack applications and lead the design, development, and deployment of AI-powered solutions, utilizing modern languages like Java, GoLang, JavaScript (React/HTMX), and GraphQL. This role is designed for a technical leader who enjoys remaining close to the technology-combining direct people management with active technical contributions, platform architecture, and code quality. You will manage the execution of product roadmaps and foster an innovative, high-performing culture that leverages advanced engineering tools and AI-driven automation to streamline workflows, optimize delivery tasks, and build highly scalable, secure platforms.
This position follows a hybrid schedule with four in-office days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and coach a team of software engineers, fostering career development, technical growth, and continuous learning
- Actively contribute to technical design, system architecture, code reviews, and hands-on software development to guide the engineering team by example
- Drive the successful design, development, and deployment of scalable, high-performance software applications, including AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges, utilizing Java, GoLang, JavaScript (React/HTMX), and GraphQL
- Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools and advanced engineering capabilities to streamline software development workflows, automate delivery tasks, and drive continuous improvement within the engineering lifecycle
- Evaluate emerging technological, software engineering, and AI/ML trends to inform robust platform architecture, solution design, and strategic team innovation
- Collaborate closely with product managers, systems architects, and business stakeholders to define technical requirements and deliver high-impact pharmacy benefit solutions
- Champion Agile methodologies and modern DevOps best practices (such as CI/CD, automated testing, SQL Server database management, and robust security standards) across the entire software delivery pipeline
- Actively support the ethical use of technology by embedding transparency, security, and quality assurance principles across all engineered solutions, ensuring the responsible use of AI

Required Qualifications:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience developing enterprise-scale full-stack applications
- 3+ years of experience directly leading, mentoring, and managing software engineering teams
- 3+ years of experience as a hands-on technical lead or individual contributor with solid technical depth across full-stack development (including hands-on coding and architectural design)
- 3+ years of experience delivering software solutions in a public cloud environment (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP)
- 1+ years of experience using or integrating AI-powered development tools (e.g., AI coding assistants) or automations within an engineering environment
- Professional experience with full-stack development, including Java, GoLang, and JavaScript (with React)
- Professional experience with database technologies, specifically SQL and SQL Server
- Professional experience implementing Agile/Scrum methodologies and robust DevOps pipelines
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or 4+ years of equivalent software engineering experience in lieu of a degree
- Experience specifically building, deploying, and managing applications within the Azure cloud platform
- Experience utilizing modern web technologies and lightweight frameworks such as HTMX and GraphQL
- Experience designing, building, or deploying AI-powered platforms, models, or intelligent integrations to address complex business needs
- Solid communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical partners
Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $112,700 to $193,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
