Job Summary

Responsible for our First Mile performance, including management/compliance of our third-party carrier base performance, optimization, cost/service performance & track/trace of all shipments from our suppliers to our Enterprise Distribution Centers, Fulfillment Centers, Branches and strategic direction for use of our Transportation Management System.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities

• Optimizes first mile transportation operations to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness by evaluating current rates, approved carriers, specified capacities, transit times, and other available data to develop executable load plans. Develops end-to-end multi-carrier strategy and cost/benefit. 
• Oversees transportation service management, including but not limited to carrier negotiations, contract records management, procurement and scheduling, service, quality, compliance, rating and routing, cost monitoring, benchmarking, forecasting and forecast accuracy. Maintains third party logistics relationships.
• Coordinates with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure efficient and cost-effective transport by planning and optimizing, considering factors like mode, rate, cube, weight, distance, and time constraints.
• Develops benchmarks and recommendations for long-term strategies based on transportation density and utilization trends.
• Oversees the selection and deployment of appropriate vehicles and/or carriers for first mile operations, ensuring they meet the needs of the specific goods being transported.
• Serves as the point of escalation for any first mile transportation issues, investigating delays and working to prevent re-occurrences to enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
• Ensures logistics and delivery programs meet safety and regulatory requirements.

• Solutions require analysis and investigation.
• Achieves planned results by decisions and actions based on professional methods, business principles, and practical experience. May recommend/make decisions regarding new programs/initiatives that have significant impact to the business and carry consequences in unsuccessful endeavors.
• Manages a larger team or multiple small teams through direction of subordinate management and/or supervisory staff.

Work Environment

• Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
• Frequent periods are spent standing or sitting in the same location with some opportunity to move about. Occasionally there may be a requirement to stoop or lift light material or equipment (typically less than 8 pounds).
• Typically requires overnight travel 5% to 20% of the time.

Education and Experience

• Typically requires BS/BA in a related discipline. Generally 7+ years of experience in a related field. May require certification. Advanced degree may offset less experience in some disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Oracle Transportation Management (OTM) and using OTM to optimize shipments.
• Experience with procurement optimization tools (e.g., JDA, CombineNet, Trade Extensions). 
• Experience supporting and building an integrated backhaul network.
• Excellent analytical and investigative skills.
• Proven leadership experience in building, managing and developing teams.
• Strong understanding of transportation regulations, safety standards, and compliance requirements.
• Demon
• strates financial acumen, including budget preparation and cost management. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
