About the Team

The Device Platform: Embedded teams are responsible for large portions of the software engineering stack, working on a wide variety of subsystems. We write bare metal and RTOS microcontroller code (STM32 product line), integrate and write code for embedded Linux and Android platforms (Qualcomm and Nvidia SOCs), maintain the associated Linux kernels, and help design and bring up all new electronics. We work closely with both the hardware team and the rest of the software organization, creating the foundation for the rest of the Skydio software team to build upon. Our team thrives on collaboration, technical excellence, and a passion for pushing the boundaries of what's possible in embedded systems.

About the role:

Reliable embedded firmware acts as the brain stem of our autonomous drones and the foundation for the growing accessory product line -- bridging the gap between the algorithms and the sensors/mechanical hardware. This team lives within the Device Platform organization and is a high impact team. As a Sr Engineering Manager you’ll make an impact in the following areas:

Leadership & Development:

  • Inspire and mentor engineers, fostering their growth and professional development.
  • Cultivate a collaborative and innovative team environment.
  • Drive performance management and career development initiatives.
  • Managing performance reviews and 1:1s.
  • Maintain a high bar for hiring while further growing the team

Project Execution:

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and successful delivery of embedded software projects.
  • Coordinate and build consensus with cross-functional teams to align goals and timelines.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time and within scope by effectively managing resources and leveraging the diverse skillsets of team members.

Technical Excellence:

  • Provide technical guidance and make critical architectural decisions.
  • Promote best practices in coding, testing, and documentation.
  • Integrate the latest industry trends and technologies into our development process.
  • Able to dive in and contribute technically when needed.

Product Development:

  • Collaborate with product management and other leaders to define and prioritize product features and requirements.
  • Ensure the development of reliable, efficient, and scalable embedded software solutions.
  • Conduct code reviews, design reviews, and technical discussions to maintain high-quality standards.

What Makes You a Good Fit:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, and Python.
  • Deep understanding of embedded systems, RTOS, microcontrollers, and hardware interfaces.
  • Experience with SoC development, especially with Nvidia or Qualcomm platforms.
  • Experience with software development tools and methodologies.
  • Proven track record of delivering successful embedded software products.
  • Experience leading small to medium sized teams while delivering on high quality product outcomes.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic thinker with strong problem-solving abilities.

Compensation: At Skydio, our compensation packages for full-time employees include competitive base salaries, equity in the form of options, comprehensive benefits, and various incentives and stipends. Compensation will vary based on factors, including skill level, proficiencies, transferable knowledge, and experience. Relocation assistance may also be provided for eligible roles. The annual base salary range for this position is $212,500 - 277,500*. Fundamentally, we believe that equity is the key to long-term financial growth, and we ensure all full-time employees have the opportunity to significantly benefit from the company’s success.
