Role Summary
As a Senior Engineering Manager (Portfolio Experiences), you will be a senior technology leader within Personal Investor Technology and a core member of tIT leadership team. This role is pivotal in shaping and delivering Vanguard’s portfolio guidance experiences, including Portfolio Watch, Portfolio Health Check, and high-impact Team initiatives.
You will lead large, cross-functional engineering teams to deliver connected, personalised, and guidance-driven digital experiences that directly improve client investment outcomes. This role requires a strong combination of strategic leadership, deep full-stack engineering expertise, and the ability to operate in complex, multi-partner environments.
You will partner closely with Product, UX, Data, Behavioural Science, and platform teams to translate technology decisions into measurable business and client impact while driving engineering excellence at scale.
Responsibilites
- Own end-to-end engineering delivery, operational health, and platform reliability for Portfolio Experiences
- Lead and develop multiple engineering teams, including Engineering Managers, Tech Leads, and Senior Engineers
- Drive delivery and production readiness for platforms such as Portfolio Watch and Portfolio Health Check
- Ensure portfolio experiences operate as an integrated suite with consistent logic and aligned architecture
- Provide system-level technical leadership, aligning architecture and delivery across internal and partner teams
- Represent engineering in governance, leadership, and risk forums; proactively manage dependencies, risks, and trade-offs
- Balance short-term delivery priorities with long-term scalability, maintainability, and platform health
- Influence partner teams’ roadmaps and capacity planning to ensure delivery against priorities
- Lead and evolve Team initiatives to accelerate innovation, experimentation, and rapid validation of client solutions
- Champion consistent engineering standards, delivery practices, and operational excellence across teams
- Partner with Architecture and Platform teams to align solutions with enterprise technology direction
- Drive adoption of modern engineering practices including DevOps, test automation, and Site Reliability Engineering
- Embed security, data governance, privacy, and regulatory compliance in all engineering outcomes
- Build, mentor, and coach high-performing teams; develop future technical and people leaders
- Define team capability frameworks and lead upskilling and succession planning initiatives
- Set performance standards and manage performance, feedback, and compensation decisions
- Lead strategic initiatives and contribute to organisation-wide engineering transformation
Qualifications and Skills
- Proven experience leading large-scale, client-facing digital platforms in enterprise environments.
- Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience, with at least 5 years in a mangerial role with a strong focus on application engineering.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in people leadership, including managing Engineering Managers and senior engineering talent
- Strong expertise in modern full-stack development, including React, Node.js, APIs (GraphQL/REST), and modern JavaScript ecosystems
- Experience designing and delivering secure, authenticated digital experiences
- Strong knowledge of AWS cloud platforms and distributed system architectures
- Experience with micro frontend architecture and scalable web platforms
- Ability to translate business and client use cases into scalable technical solutions
- Proven ability to influence across Product, Design, Data, and Platform organisations
- 7+ years of experience working in Agile environments (Scrum, Kanban, Lean)
- Expertise in modern engineering practices including DevOps, CI/CD, test automation, and SRE
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, including engagement with senior leadership
