ABC Fitness is building an AI-native organization—where new products and capabilities are powered by agents, APIs, and orchestration systems built on a shared AI platform.
At the center of this is the API & AI Orchestration layer. This is the connective tissue of our AI Execution Model. As the Engineering Manager for this group, you will lead the teams responsible for:
Modernized APIs designed specifically for agentic consumption.
MCP / ACP Servers (Model/Agent Context Protocol) that expose internal capabilities to LLMs.
Agent Workflows that power real-world product features and new revenue-driving SKUs.
Your teams won't just build AI; they will work in an AI-native way. You will lead small, elite squads that leverage the best tooling available (Cursor, LLM-coding assistants) and the ephemeral, agent-friendly environments built by our Principal SREs.
What You’ll Do
Lead AI Orchestration & API Teams: Build and manage high-impact, autonomous squads focused on the MCP layer and complex agent workflows.
Define the MCP/Orchestration Layer: Establish the standards for how internal ABC systems are exposed to agents. You’ll ensure that our internal "context" is structured, reliable, and optimized for LLM reasoning.
Define agent-friendly API standards: Ensure APIs/tools exposed to agents have strong schemas, versioning, auth/authz, tenant boundaries, failure handling, replay/debug support, and backward compatibility.
Build responsible AI-native engineering practices: Help engineers use AI coding assistants, ephemeral environments, and automation to improve quality and speed without weakening review discipline, testing, security, or maintainability.
Turn Capabilities into Revenue: Work closely with Product and the AI-Native Org to ensure that the platform's capabilities are successfully translated into market-ready features and new AI-led SKUs.
Partner Across the Stack: Collaborate with AI Enablement (the platform "brains") and SRE (the "runtime") to ensure the orchestration layer is scalable, observable, and cost-efficient.
Build and grow high-performing squads: Motivate, coach, and develop engineers through effective 1:1s, growth plans, regular feedback, stretch assignments, and clear expectations.
Create the operating system for fast execution: Establish planning, prioritization, retrospectives, delivery metrics, decision logs, and communication rhythms that help small squads move quickly and sustainably.
Develop leaders within the team: Delegate ownership of design reviews, rollout plans, retrospectives, technical discovery, and cross-team coordination so engineers grow in scope and judgment.

Not a traditional backend team focused on simple CRUD services.
Not a platform-only role disconnected from the product's impact on revenue.
Not managing large, slow-moving teams—this is about high-velocity, small-squad execution.
What You Bring
People leadership depth: Experience motivating engineers, running effective 1:1s, giving actionable feedback, managing performance, and helping engineers grow through clear development plans.
Technical judgment in complex systems: Ability to guide architecture across APIs, distributed systems, agent workflows, observability, security, reliability, and cost trade-offs.
Systems-thinking management style: You build team mechanisms — not heroics — so execution, quality, communication, and growth are repeatable.
API & Systems Expertise: Deep understanding of API design, integration patterns, and the "Model Context Protocol" (MCP) or similar frameworks.
Product & Revenue Mindset: You connect technical milestones to customer value. You understand that the best API is the one that enables a sale.
Agentic Fluency: You have a working knowledge of how agents use tools, how they fail, and how to structure "context" to improve their success rates.
Change leadership: Experience helping teams adopt new engineering practices and tools while maintaining trust, clarity, quality, and sustainable delivery.
Coaching mindset: You develop engineers by creating context, asking strong questions, delegating ownership, and helping people build judgment rather than taking over the work.
Bonus Points:
Experience modernizing legacy/brownfield APIs for machine consumption.
Hands-on experience with LLM orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangChain, AutoGPT, or custom agent runtimes).
Familiarity with "Shadow Production" environments for testing non-deterministic workflows.
